Calzaghe v Hopkins rematch - 6 months after there 1st fight

Calzaghe. As their fight wore on he was the one that got stronger and took over. People fault Hopkins stamina for this, but what was he doing but throwing a few punches here and there and excessively holding and spoiling? He didn't tire in the Pavlik fight, or in his recent effort against Pascal. Would've been more of the same of the end of their first fight in the second fight. I'm sure a fairer ref would've been involved aswell with Joe holding the negotiating cards having the W, and I can't go past a Calzaghe UD.

The better question should be what the outcome would've been had they had fought in 2003? Unfortunately because of Hopkins we'll never know, just as we'll never know how a rematch with a prime RJJ would've gone because of him. Of course no-one holds that against Hopkins

 

Calzaghe by a wider decision than the first time. Cal wouldnt probably get dropped again so that gives Calzaghe a round (115-113 = 116-112) then maybe another round he wins due to early adjustments (117-111)

 

well they agreed to fight in the US, Hopkins was getting three or four million. Joe signed, and when it came time for Hopkins to sign he demanded double the money and the fight was cancelled. I think he fought Hakkar instead for something like 250K.

 

Nobody taking into consideration that Calzaghe may not be in top shape, gained weight and has some ring rust whereas Hopkins has been staying active?

How does he beat Hopkins by a close margin, takes a 2 and half year layoff, comes back and beats him by a wider margin? I don't get it..

Pavlik and Pascal don't have the swarming, high workrate style of Calzaghe. Against them, Hopkins was allowed to fight at his preferred pace. Calzaghe, despite hardly landing anything meaningful, bothered Hopkins because of his high stamina and pace.

A 2003 version of Hopkins, who was built for 15 rounds and was more aggressive, would have beaten Calzaghe. But his stubbornness didn't allow for that fight, just like it didn't allow for a Roy Jones rematch at the right time.

 

Hopkins connects with a perfectly timed straight right in round one, with power.
Slappy White collapses on his back with his legs floundering around in the air as he attempts to regain his senses and stand. Slappy gets up at the eight count, wobbling as Hopkins waits.
The ref continues the action as Hopkins pounces on Slappy White connecting with two solid right hands which catch Joe on the temple and chin as he was flailing his arms in defense.
Slappy goes down, gets back up at the count of 7 and the ref looking into his eyes and seeing him wobble badly stops the fight.

Hopkins has his revenge with a rd1 TKO.
Joe goes back to London and gets more blow.
