Calzaghe v Jones Jr is a JOKE

    My Opinions

Roy Jones Jr is my favourite ever boxer. In my opinion, he is top 10 P4P ever and the best fighter of his generation.

I think Joe Calzaghe is a good fighter- but not a great one. I don't think he deserves to be #2 pound-for-pound in the world, I don't like his fighting style, I don't think he deserved the decision v Bernard Hopkins, and I don't think he has achieved much in his career, as he has been a world champion since 1997 and has only had 3 great wins in all that time (Lacey, Kessler, Hopkins).

    The Facts

Joe Calzaghe is currently the WBA super-middleweight champion, The Ring light-heavyweight champion, and is ranked #2 pound-for-pound in the world by The Ring. He is coming off the best performance of his career v Kessler, and a win over Bernard Hopkins- who was #1 at light-heavyweight and is still top 5 pound-for-pound in The Ring's pound-for-pound rankings.

In 2003, Roy Jones Jr came down from heavyweight to light-heavyweight, clearly a jump that his body could not cope with, and after winning a debatable points decision v Antonio Tarver, he was knocked out cold by two guys he would have demolished in his prime pre-03 state (Tarver & Johnson), then beat 2 nobodies on points (Prince something or other, and a guy Hanshaw who got KO'd in 5 by another LHW contender in his last fight), then couldn't stop a blown-up welterweight who was out of shape, rustier than the Titanic, and hadn't won a fight in years or ever fought at the weight.

    The Truth

I thought for a fight to be sanctioned by the authorities, if a guy is challenging a world champion he needs to pass the criteria of having been competing regularly and successfully at a high level of competition, to avoid ugly mismatches. Has RJJ really been doing this in the last 5 years? I'd say he has been getting KO'd by decent LHWs then outpointing guys definitely NOT at world title level. He was getting knocked spark out 4 years ago by the last decent opposition he fought, and has had a further 4 years to age and decline since then.

I put it to you that Joe Calzaghe is shamefully going for the Little Risk Big Reward strategy of choosing to beat up a faded legend, instead of being a man and taking on a much younger, hungrier, more dangerous opponent like Kelly Pavlik. This is a mismatch that could get ugly. It should not have been permitted and we should not build up interest in it. Shame on Joe.

Shame on Joe is right. Hes running from Pavlik because his boy lockett told him to stay the hell away from him. All respect for Joe is gone after saying he wanted a washed up jones after pavliks camp called him directly out. Cal-ducky.

Joe hasn't 100% said this is his last fight.

I think he just chose Jones for the money and because Jones is so hard to get in the ring when Jones said he wanted the fight Joe realised this maybe the only time to get him in the ring.

If Calzaghe beats Jones he may well fight Pavlik afterwards.

I would prefer Pavlik to fight Abraham first though and have Calzaghe fight the Pavlik/Abraham winner.

    lacy, bika, kessler...

Joe's been in the game a long time, if he wants to take the opportunity to go for the big money fight so what? And you're not seriously worried about Roy are you, it's a thin veil for your Calzaghe jealousy. I personally think JC will fight Pavlik at the Millenium Stadium for his final fight, and beat him. But it would never stop losers like yourself who look over real talent because they're not American. Chump.

Here here ... Every guy Calzaghe has fought since Lacy (barring Manfredo Jr) has been followed by Americans hyping another character that's going to beat him. I'm not too keen on the RJJ fight either and would like to Roy take the win but this idea that Pavlik is somehow more of a threat than Kessler was is a bit rich.

I've lost all respect for Joe Cal-Slappy.
I was a fan for several years but that all went tube surfing down the toilet when he blatantly ducked Kelly Pavlik.

I hope Roy Jones kicks his ass from pillar to post.

Professional atheletes aren't supposed to be like the average 'weasel' because why would anyone pay to see some 'average joe bloke' when they could look out their window for free. Although I wouldn't mind seeing RJJ/ Calzaghe, I too think boxing would be better off if Jones was forced to beat a legit top 10 guy at SMW or LHW. Jones could've done that by now but RJJ took a path of least resistence and big money after his two warm up fights.

just like kelly's blatant ducking of abraham?makes me sick when a 'champion' goes out and fights someone like lockett instead of trying to dismantle a division!calzaghe definatly is not ducking kelly,it's more like, right i wonder who i would rather have on my record an ATG like roy jones in a fight that would do huge numbers,or the young middleweight champion who hasn't really proven much yet and still isn't a household name. i must say i want the pavlik calzaghe fight to happen big time but im not disappointed by a fight with rjj.

You know with all this talk about how deserving Roy is regarding his title shot not once was there anything mentioned with regards to Williams and his un deserving shot at the middle weight champion ship !

Another thing Jones has been on record before Joe opted to fight Hopkins that the fight he wanted was the Calzaghe fight .

Talks started during the time of the Kessler fight when Jones offered to fight Kessler if he could not get a fight with Calzaghe ..

I understand people are pissed that Joe opted to cash out against Jones but will they be as pissed if Pavlik opts to cash out against Paul ? Of course not already there are people who say the fight will be competeive etc etc ..The double standards are rediculous ..

That fight alone is a complete mismatch more so than Joe fighting this version of Roy but yet there are more people defending it and still trying to rip Joe for doing what most boxers wish to do at the tail end of their career ..

    THATS THE TRUTH !
