but be fair, calzaghe isn't getting anywhere near a ring containing a prime chris eubank, he dont wanna lose his zero, so that's never going to happen. He ALWAYS waited till he touhght they were injured and/or retiring, with the exception of this mediocre mr lacy (and even then he tried to bunk out of the fight several times). on another note, minor titlists like lacy get beaten all the time every year, every other month - why the big fuss about this one?
Surprised they got Joe into the ring (according to his book). Always seemed to be one thing or the other with him when it came to the big names!
I was there ringside for it we started chanting EASY 'EASY mid way through the third Joe landed some serious leather that night it's easy for some who've never been in a ring to call them slaps but Jeffrey's face confirms my version of events .
They tend not to get so totally dominated and ruined as Lacy was that night. And, to use a term that is horribly over-used on these forums, Lacy was "exposed". He had been hyped and managed to perfection before this fight and it all came crashing down.
actually it happens every year that they get beat like that. but lacy wasn't ruined, he was already shyyt. SO again explain to why this one example is getting such a tooting.
ten years, and it's still brought up whenever a British guy is up against the odds. There have been major upset wins for British boxers since. Like Froch vs Bute and more recently and much more significant Fury vs Klitschko. Maybe it's time to forget about that one, in which a massively overrated boxer just got exposed by a world class boxer.
It might happen every year, but live on terrestrial TV with the Ring title in the mix? The fight got a very high profile relative to most fights - Calzaghe was a household name and the Lacy hype was in full flow. Many people, including respected folks like Sugar Ray Leonard, thought Lacy would win. The betting odds were pretty much even. Very few people, certainly in the American press, expected such a shut-out - I doubt you'll find many references to Lacy being a "minor titlist" written before the bout. There was a fair bit of shadenfreude after Calzaghe derailed the "next big American hope", and I guess that contributes to why this fight got put on such a pedestal. High profile, well-marketed, a completely dominant performance plus shutting up the Yanks are all potential reasons why this fight stands out from the crowd.
this is once again, an outright lie. calzaghe was an unknown holder of an unknown title, who occupied at best 1 or 2 lines in newspapers up till lacy. lacy was his first defence against a prime opponent, so it warranted more attention than previous 1 liner fights certainly. course he would, joe had done nothing to warrant being betted on in his 9 year fake reign. who wouldn't think lacy would win against such fakery. it was a good win for a brit, certainly, so I guess if you mean on the british level it was decent then fair play.
I think a more accurate description is when a british guy actually steps up. its not right to compare it to froch bute, froch didn't waste any time for nearly a decade like joe did with largely weaklings. froch bute was a true destruction of a minor titlist, joe would never be able to manage that.
which would explain why as soon as bute and froch became his mandos or challenger, he ran away ad dumped the involved title just as soon as he'd won it. in 11 years he only ever fought a rival title holder to his wbo one twice, one when he waited 4 years for them to get injured before facign them and the other when he'd waited 7 years for someone shyte to take over after ottke had retired. both in Cardiff with his welsh mafia's setup judges to protect him. He was never going to face them in a hurry when he'd just ran away from them.
ten years on - ironically the length of time for joe to dare to fight someone at world level. it is however impressive in context - the equivalent of one of todays minor IBO/WBF shyt title holders stepping up to win one of the major titles. kinda like an "international" title holder winning a world title...although theyn usually do it within a year or two, joe took nearly a decade to do it.
