    Only better?

The question you should really be asking is how Calzaghe would fare against Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, Harry Kid Matthews and other Marciano victims.

He would enter some of these fights as the underdog.

I do hope that Calzaghe is not going to become the new Roy Jones.

He would and if he fought rocky at heavy he would get KTFO. Like the "victims" u mentioned as they were old/above there natural weight just like Calzaghe would be. But if it was at a bit of a lighter catchweight i could see Joe outpointing him over 12.

Sorry 196osh, didn't catch your "catchweight" thang. I am just going per the initial post with no talk of catchweights. Marciano certainly did enough gruelling work to come in at what he did and any talk of catchweights for him is simply fodder.

I think you are making the mistake of thinking that Marciano at 190 lbs is like a modern 190lb fighter.

Fighters of that era did a hell of a lot of roadwork to get their weight down as low as they could and never lifted weights. They trained almost like olympic half marathon runners in some cases.

Marciano is not so much a bigger version of Jeff Lacey as a slimline version of David Tua.

Yeah fair enough it was not mentioned in the initial post. Alot of fighters do alot of road work. But there would be no reason for marciano to dehydrate himself in order to make weight. So therefore is no reason he couldnt loose 5lbs of water (was 185lbs when he won his first title) so I dont think its quite fodder.

But as there was no mention of it in the initial post -
    Marciano TKO late at heavy.

He is not realy that much bigger than lacy in actual fact if you were to look at lacys fight weight. He is just MUCH MUCH MUCH better. I dont by any means think that they were like todays heavies but when the cruiser limit was 190lbs i would think that they were reasonably close to what Marciano was. But as i said at heavy Rocky would KO Joe.

Marciano struggled against Charles and Moore. But of course now everybody would say that they all knew it would be just a matter of time before Marciano KOs them.

Classic example of old timers getting immortalised.

Tyson was struggling against Botha too unti he koed him with 1 punch. And Tyson is heavily criticised for that.

Until Calzaghe shows some weakness, I will give him thye due reservation in the same way that Mmarciano is enjoying now because he stayed undefeated (although definitely not without weaknesses).

I read an article that says right after he retired, Rocky Marciano had been criticized for his level of opposition and rather primitive boxing skills. At that time, Rocky hardly cracks within top 10 HW ATG, most experts had Dempsey, Louis, Johnson, Jeffries ranked ahead of him.

50 years later, it is a suicide if you box against Marciano. Give it another 50 years and it would be crazy even thinking of fighting Marciano.
