Sugar Ray Robinson's manager stated before SRR's Lightheavywt. title shot against Joey Maxim, that if they win, then they were going after Marciano. Robinson's immediate reply was: "What, are you trying to get me killed."
Yeah i would imagen that he would mess SRR up, but he would mess anybody up that couldn't keep him at range/out brawl him. And to his credit nobody he ever faced ever could!
The whole concept that Calzaghe would last more than a couple or rounds. As put before this is just an attempt to drag down Marciano by a bunch of no-nothings. And I think Calzaghe is a hall-of-fame fighter.
Marciano would probably have KO'd Calzaghe late. For all of Calzaghe's speed and skill he would be against a fighter with an iron will who was heavier and could punch. No question that Calzaghe would take a few rounds off Marciano. Marciano's sheer determination and persistance would pay off.
Great forum topic. Back in the day fights like this sometimes took place. Most famous was Conn @ about 175 taking on Louis @ about 200. Conn was giving Louis all he could handle and then some....until round #13. The best example of the little guy taking on the big guy (guys actually) is Joe Choynski. Look this guy up if you don't know about him. He weighed about 175, usually less. He fought Future ATG Jim Jefferies to a draw and he was out weighed by about 50 lbs. He KTFO future ATG Jack Johnson in 3 rounds!! He fought ATG Jim Corbett 3 or 4 times but Corbett had his # but not after getting seriously challenged. He also fought Sullivan and Fitzsimmons. The almost universally agreed that Choynski was the hardest puncher they ever faced!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do not believe in catch weights. If you think you can take a guy, then do it, just like Conn and Choynski did. I think Marciano's abilities were greatly underappreciated, controlled mayhem. Because of his success against other ATG smaller fighters as mentioned by others, with their skills and speed rivaling Calz, Marciano would track him down and knock him out. May go 7 rounds but I doubt it. A couple days ago, ispired by Conn and Choynski's feats, I suggested that Floyd (since he claims to be the greatest ever) fight Clazeghe. Only two guys would even respond to the following question, " If Floyd fought Calz, would he do as well as Conn and Choynski did when the went up against the bigger men." All kinds of excuses were made, "it's unrealistic man with all the weight classes nowadays", "Why don't you just have him fight a pack of wolves", "why not just ask him to get to the moon with a paddle." To give the two who did answer credit, although they both thought it was a dumb idea, one thought Calz would beat May and the other said Mayweather would pretty much beat anyone in the world. A lot of people say that well those guys Conn and Choynski were from the old era, yet Choynski was 50 years older than Conn!! For perspective Conn was only 39 years older than Sugar Ray Leonard. Can't people just use their imagination a little? This is not an unprecedented match. I think it's great to think outside the box a bit. Go Calzeghe VS. Marciano.....I'd watch it
