hmmm ive seen simliar threads where Sugar Ray Robinson knocks bernard Hopkins out easy, or Marciano demolishes Vitali, or even Charles, Spinks, Hagler demolishing Roy Jones. its easy to be gunghoe in fantasy match ups but realistically the actual fight would never turn out so dramatically one sided certainly not anything like the predictions in the threads.
He most certainly is not, calzaghe is a very talented fighter, however in a fight against prime RJJ he'd get embarressed, wide wide ud or late tko for the 168 version of jones, the best fighter i've ever seen live was that version of roy and calzaghe wouldn't live with him
Things is prime roy does everything joe can do and can do it better, he got much quicker hands, better defence, more power, better reflexes and probably a better ring general, the only thing joe is better at is his chin and workrate, it won't be enough against jones, jones wins fairly easily in my opinion
although i cant really argue that much against rjj winning... people need to watch the kessler fight - how smart calz is in the ring, he knows when someone is working, when it isnt - maybe nothing EVER could work against prime rjj. but, he's not stupid, he wont do something thats not working - he's not the type of fighter to fight 12 rounds hoping to score a lucky ko. the main question mark - ironically, is what is RJJ's chin REALLY like.. was it the trip to and from heavy weight that took his chin away? was he rock jawed before - or was it always there, just no one was close to being fast enough to touch it? calz may well be one of the few people who could have been fast enough, and calz wasnt ever going to be knocked out himself - great chin. another thing - came up when against kessler, calz is terrified of losing, but uses it to inspire himself to win - rather than losing his head. people say his best weapon is his speed - its his will to win, his ring generalship - which after the hopkins fight, people will truly see how good it is. Jones rarely got into slug fests, would dominate them with speed, humiliate them into making big mistakes, then capitalizing. would calz be humiliated? has a far better chin than most opponents of rjj - so might not have been as hurt, and calz has power - look at lacy's face, and kessler - kessler was knocked down (IT WAS A PUNCH - WATCH IT), and if the ref hadn't got involved, he would have taken a knee against calz - slaps or not, they bloody well hurt. personally i think calz best chance would be to lure rjj into a trap - let rjj think calz is slower than he really is, let him get cocky and show boating, then turn up the speed and workrate, forcing rjj back. he needs to do two things though - hurt rjj, but mainly - DENT HIS PRIDE. dent rjj's pride, make him look silly - not easy, but you need to lure him into a trap - like rjj did to toney with the knockdown; if its dented, he'll want blood - and will come back out all guns blazing - hopefully - he'll want to make a statement!!! now its a war - both have decent and above average power, both are very fast. now this is where its interesting - we've seen throughout both guys careers - rjj doesnt like being hit, and will avoid it if possible, and his chin is not 100% proven - very rarely hit in his prime, so we dont truly know for 100% certain - is it any good. calz on the other hand loves a slugfest, has a great chin - and if he gets hit he'll hit them back 10:1, and just as hard - hands be damned. this may be the one situation in which the advantage is with calzaghe, and he doesnt usually let an advantage slip. now im not saying calz will beat rjj, im not saying rjj will beat calz. im saying its not quite that clear cut - calz if he sees rjj is faster, is gonna try something else - and the best way of voiding any advantage is to mess with someones head. the above is one of trillions of possibilities in a fight. its one which could have happened, and its one i feel calzaghe would have won if he had managed to pull it off.
Calzaghe becomes just another W for RJJ on his way to a clear UD or possible late KO as he catches Calzaghe coming in with a beautiful counter.
YES I agree, but I also think Jones is better than Rick Thornberry Tucker Pudwill + 10 other Calzaghe defences. + I don't think Calzaghe would be the hardest fighter Jones has faced. Id say Tarver (because of the weight making issue) Hopkins, James Toney, Ruiz and Toney are far bigger challenges than beating a guy who has never fought a P4P fighter.
I think Jones would have a chance vs Calzaghe even today if the fight was to be in the US. If he fought in Wales Calzaghi would have 50,000 fans getting him jacked up. It makes a big difference when you have a partisan crowd (he wont have that vs B-Hop) cant wait.
