All the talk these days is in regards to a fight with Pavlik, and everyone seems to be writing Jones off as a washed-up has-been, and a kind of get out of Dodge money-making clause for Joe. Does the current version of RJJ have a chance. I would see him as an underdog, but...jeez...a very live underdog, even the present version. Opinions?
Yes he's a very live underdog because Calzaghe has always had the advantage of his speed, which against Jones will not be apparent. Jones will have the upper hand in speed, but Calzaghe's aggressiveness will give Jones too much trouble and he'll give away rounds because of this.
I think he is a smarter fighter as he got older, but, I dont think he could take cal. I hope he shocks the whole UK for turning down Pavlik. But I doubt it will happen
Exactly, he goes to the ropes and doesn't appear to ever want to move off ... for whatever reason internally, he's not gonna win over the judges by caging up.
One-sided fight in favor of Calzaghe, Jones is NOTHING like he used to be. Jones needs some good movement here and he lacks the stamina to keep that up and lacks the stamina to show some serious speed for more than 3 rounds. In about 3 or 4 tops you'll find Jones on the ropes taking shots because his legs won't carry him for 12 moving around as he used to. Bull**** fight, that's all I can say, Jones only has power and is not not enough AT ALL to get him the victory here. Prime Jones would've sliced this guy to pieces and thrashed him in 7 rounds, but of course he's 40 now, which is why Calzaghe is taking it.
Unless Calzaghe get's old overnight, this will be a serious mismatch. No way Jones can come close to matching Calzaghe's workrate. Roy hasn't stopped anyone in 6 years, including an over the hill Welterweight, so I don't see a come from behind KO happening either.
Jones has virtually no chance. No meaningful victories since Tarver in 2003, and no KOs since Woods in 2002. I absolutely will not watch any more Jones fights live.
I'd probably watch this still, but beating Jones right now doesn't do anything for Joe C really. He's just doing what everyone else at this stage does, look for OLD names that can get you paid. Funny, didn't think Joe c wuold go this route. Wasn't he supposedly making BANK already in Wales all these years? Hard to justify 'cashing out' when that's what you've been doing for your career.
, I got Jones by UD or KO. F dat if this fight happens I have the uttmost confidence in RJ 2 get this done. Calzaghe wont ba ble 2 overwhelm Rj with his speed like other opponents. and if RJ connects with that 1,2 that bhop did, I dont thin Calzaghe is gonna get up from that. RJ is a more accurate puncher than Bernard. Better body puncher with more power, which will inevitably slow down mister Calzaghe. Dont count out RJ. I think his effective counter punching can do it. I am rocking with RJ all the way. Calzaghe is gonna try 2 swarm him, b/c h damn sure cant outbox him. Makes a good matchup IMO. Hope it happens
Jones has been known to throw less than powerful shots, but Calzaghe makes Jones look like Tyson, when it comes to power. I agree, though, that Jones has a chance. And a decent one, I would say.
lol not another old man? are you people serious, he's already been KOed twice by live opponents... he's got nothing left and the way i see it he's done and calzaghe would just blitz him
To say Roy has no chance is foolish. Joe C doesn't have the power to keep Roy caged up. Roy is calling hard for this fight because he obviously sees something that he likes. The last time he called this hard for a fight was against Ruiz who he knew he'd obviously beat. And workrate is way overrated. Joe C out worked BHop and barely won that fight. Roy doesn't have to be "the old Roy" to win this fight at all.
