He wanted nothing to do with Roy, and he had no interest in facing Pavlik in 2008. He also stated that guys like Tarver and Dawson didn't excite him and they'd done nothing to warrant a fight with him. Which would have been fair enough had he not have happily fought lesser fighters.
Yeah, in 2008 he wanted to fight him but Joe wanted to cash out against Roy instead. Joe would have made a lot more money against Kelly, and unless he'd have been injured, in my opinion, he'd have beaten him easier than what Bernard did.
Do you realise how bad that link makes Joe look? He said they offered to fight Kelly straight after he'd beaten Lacy in 2006. What? atsch In 2006, Kelly was an unknown NABF MW who'd done nothing. Think about that for a moment. He says that he rematched Taylor to avoid him. Again, what? atsch Before their split, Frank W tried to talk Joe out of fighting Roy, to instead fight Kelly, again, in what would have been a much more relevant fight. If Kelly had done nothing to warrant a fight with him in 2008, what had he done to warrant a fight in 2006? If Kelly didn't excite him in 2008, how did he excite him in 2006? This is a prime example of why Joe has received criticism throughout his career. The fact that he approached an unknown, NABF MW champ, speaks volumes.
Madmink, There's lots of articles online regarding a potential fight between Joe and Kelly. They make for very interesting reading. I can't post links at the moment, especially the ones from B.Scene. If you're interested, just type the following keywords into your search engine: "Kelly Pavlik's manager responds to Joe Calzaghe" "Frank W (his surname in full) responds, tells all on Joe Calzaghe" Have a read, then tell me what you think.
Regardless if your going to believe a disgruntled ex promoter or pavliks manager calzagge would have schooled him.and to suggest he was afraid of him would be foolish
I've already said that I think he'd have beaten Kelly easier than Bernard did. The point is, he clearly had no intention of fighting him and he took the easy option in Roy instead. Frank makes some very interesting comments. Why would he lie and make something random up like how he wanted to fight Freeman Barr if it hadn't been true? Why has Joe who has a huge ego never denied it?
calzaghe needed to avoid anyoine who might beat him or would beat him, thats why. He was petrified of losing his zero, he knew he and his fans would have little else as claim to fame if it was gone.
no at age 36, joe would have got destoryed if he was getting knocked down casually by 40somethings. prime froch hits harder and better than 40somethings. Theres a good reason joe ran as soon as someone like froch became an unavoidable mando, he could easily have fought one of the "big" title mandos before moving up for roy. Joe had to preserve his zero, without which he only had kessler and maybe reid and bika.
