No doubt some might use this as evidence why Joe would've beaten Dean in the pro ranks as well, but Calzaghe was a good couple of years older than him, and was physically much more developed. It was a case of pitting a man against a boy, as can happen in the ams. And by his own admission Francis wasn't a great amateur either.
if dean hadnt got in trouble with the law then blew to cruiser i think he would of given calzaghe some troubles.
Dean Francis was potential world class and that one night he just needed a win to get a shot and sadly got injured and it went downhill from there. Dean was class. I like to see him fight Tony Bellew if he drops back to light heavy.
Dean's take on events was that he was only defending his sister's friend from some aggressive rugger types on a night out, and the judge went out of his way to make an example out of him. Although like most I believe it was more the shoulder troubles which did for his world title aspirations. He's still ranked number seven at light-heavy in the WBO's rankings, and whilst I believe he should stay retired, i'd still love to see him get a shot at that title should Cleverly win it in the near future.
i saw a video of froch vs inkin as amateurs...froch lost, but it showed exactly why he would have demolished him over 12 as a pro. ams are ams... pros are pros
Joe would still beat Francis in the pro's imo, but francis was certainly a good enough fighter himself to go on to worlds titles:smoke
Francis punched very very naturally, and so could focus on power and velocity because accuracy just came anyway. He had a very good stiff left jab, too. When he matured and strengthened as a man towards mid-20s and sorted his diet out, that led to devastating punching, prior to the major shoulder problems. He demolished Cornelius Carr, who Collins looked **** against. Same with Starie, who Calzaghe looked **** against.
Great videos:good On a side note Francis has to be perhaps one of Britains biggest wasted talents. I remember his career going down hill after the Undra White fight.
Frederic Seiller as well, knocked him clean out for the European title. Against Collins and Liles, and Kalambay and Rocchigiani, Seiller was still standing.
The thing is I disagree, but I know I have very little to base my opinion on other than my assumptions of what Dean would've become. I was certain Dean was going to become a world champ who'd defend several times, unify and have a glorious career. So was Chris Sanigar, the poor sod. Here's a great article, from what seems an eternity ago: http://www.boxing-monthly.co.uk/content/9807/three.htm
