I watched the fight twice - first time live (on Fox), second time on replay. Despite the first round KD, Calzaghe was comfortably taking control of the fight from about halfway through round 3. Hopkins had a late burst of energy after his faked low blow rest in round 10 (?), but apart from that, he kept well away from Calzaghe. Calzaghe was the busier and more aggressive fighter, and he also threw and landed more punches than Hopkins did. The people who claim Hopkins won are using their own opinion on how effective Calzaghe's punches were - if Calzaghe wasn't hitting Hopkins, or, at the very least, was only hitting Hopkins with 'slaps' why did Hopkins stay away from him for 8 rounds? Calzaghe hit Hopkins with some nice flush punches and kept coming at him, while Hopkins threw and landed the odd flush punch and then retreated. It's pretty obvious that Hopkins' late rally after his 10th round rest was him hoping he could KO Calzaghe - if he was winning the fight at that point, why the rush? Hopkins knows he lost the fight, no matter what face he put on at hearing the announcement :hey
Excellent post, and I agree for the most part. :yep It was just such a negative fight due to Hopkin's style - hit, hold, hit, hold. I sure as hell would rather see Calzaghe square off against Dawson, if he keeps fighting, than see him face B-hop again.
Yep, Hopkins fought ultra-defensively, which spoiled the fight...he was obviously confident after the first round KD, and tried to capitalise on it, but I think he became discouraged when Calzaghe not only fought back immediately, but lifted the pace every round thereafter. Hopkins realised he couldn't hang with Calzaghe, so rather than put it all on the line and look bad losing, he put all of his energy into spoiling the fight in an effort to make Calzaghe look bad. Just a pity that he faked the low blow, because that just made him look like a ***** after all the sneaky fouls he's committed throughout his career...he put a lot of effort into his look of shocked disbelief at the official announcement :yep
Terrible performance from Hopkins but I thought he did enough to win. Calzaghe was waving his arms all over the place but just couldn't land.
goot post, well if u look at the compubox numbers calzaghe landed my punches to bhop then any other fighter in his career. i had it calzaghe by 3 rounds
Calzaghe made the fight close on purpose. He knew if he slapped B-Hop out in the first round that people would say Hops was shot. The truth is he went down on purpose just to give the illusion of a competitive fight. Calzaghe can take out any fighter at will by just fully clenching his fists. He only slaps to make it looks like a fair fight.
i still think jc won the fight due to volume of punches and aggression. meaning, he was taking the fight to bhop. but really, it was a boring fight. if only bhop threw caution to the wind and went for a slambang affair. i mean the guy is 43. he needs to go out with a bang. (he did ko pavlik) but for me, jc was the bigger fish. and sadly it got away. kudos to jc for recovering after the knockdown. split decision is fine with me. btw, i am impressed with those who watched it again. it will bore me to sleep if i will attempt to watch it again. after the first round, it was pretty much zz.zzz.zzz.zzzz.
By him!
He doesn't dispute the Jones loss or his debut fight which he lost. What are you talking about?
I distinctly heard him say on a documentary "I lost". Either way it still proves "TKO"'s post to be inaccurate.
Yea i had Calzaghe winning the fight... but boxing news made an interesting point after the fight, if a football team has 20 shots and scores 2 goals, and a team have 10 shots n score 5 goals, the team who shoot less win the game, and thats the way it should be in boxing. On this point I agree, but thats not the way it is, and under boxing scoring methods Calzaghe won the fight. But I think that judging needs to be assessed, the aggressor shouldnt always take the points. The more hurtful shots should take the points and if we go on who had the more hurtful shots in this fight, it was Hopkins.
