Another one of these threads... another one-sided view based on "if Roy to turn back the clock, he can pull a Pavlik on Calzaghe..."

Don't you, I mean CAN'T YOU even imagine Calzaghe might be past his prime as well? Don't you think he himself could put up a better performance in 2008, turning back the clock to let's say 2003, when he relied more on punching power? (less problems with the hands). I mean in the end we agree and I respect your opinion: Roy can most definitely win this one. KO is possible of course. But your argument leading to this point is wrong. Argument is that if Roy turns back the clock, can beat a prime fighter like Calzaghe. But Calzaghe is not the young prime and powerful guy who stopped Mitchell showing very decent power. The right argument is not bringing back the old form, because that's not fair to Calzaghe, who's past is as well, just not THAT past. The correct argument is styles make fights, and like you, I picked Hopkins to beat Pavlik. But that win had nothing to do with turning back the time. It was turning back Pavlik weapons against him. Hopkins had the right style, Pavlik had the wrong one.

I think both Calzaghe and Hopkins put up the best performance possible for their age in 2008. But 5 years back, it's not only Hopkins, but Calzaghe was closer to his absolute prime, so that doesn't mean that it's a FACT that Hopkins would've beaten Calzaghe back than. Just because the big wins came late for Joe, it doesn't mean he was in his absolute prime late in his career. It's a subjective opinion based on the argument that Hopkins past it, but also ignoring the argument that Calzaghe is past it in 2008.

Same opinion: Roy can pull it off. Prime Roy would beat a prime Calzaghe. But I don't think Roy can win this one bacause he might turn back the clock, but because of his style, which is, was and always will be bad for Calzaghe, who's ideal opponents are fighters coming forward.

By the way, I'm a Roy fan as well and like Calzaghe, but his arrogance is getting out of control, I might find myself rooting for Jones.

I understand what you're saying. Although I'm not really fan of Joe (I want him to do well generally, just not someone who I identify with a lot) but yeah the idea of Roy vs. Bernard II is great. I think it will happen whatever the result in the Calzaghe. As long as Roy does well, then I'll be happy, win, lose or...draw?

Fair enough, my argument isn't really a "roll back the years one" more of a Roy has what it takes right now, argument. No outcome in this fight will surprise me, anything is possible.

lol even IF Jones somehow hurts Calzaghe he won't finish him off, he will get too tire to be able to finish him. Just look at the last Jones fights, he had Tito and Hanshaw hurt, but then he stopped throwing punches.

Well, I'd rule out a clean, crushing KO for Joe. I can imagine him hurting Jones and landing some bombs, but I just can't see landing a finishing shot to knock Jones out cold... TKO, maybe. KO, I don't see that.

i think he could just wear roy down and then maybe catch him with somethin fairly minor late on and it will be over, jones doesnt seem to have much punch resistence any more

First of all, I believe Calzaghe is going to win.

That said, I give Roy a 30-35 % chance here.

He is still a top-ranked Light Heavyweight (in the top six of all four sanctioning bodies and the RING rankings).

He has the better skill set and has one-punch KO-power in either hand.

He has shown little in the past four years, but I believe a good portion of that is mental.

When he fought Tarver for the third time, IMO, he lost almost entirely due to his mental state. He turned on the old Roy and made round five the most one-sided of the fight. Why couldn't he have fought the entire fight that way ?

I believe he's overly worried about being on the wrong end of another brutal KO.

If he has his mind right, I believe he has it in him to perform better than he has been doing and pull this one out.

Do I think he will ?

    Probably Not.
