This wasnt the tune being sung on forums including this one, lacy was going to smash an overrated brit to pieces.
IF you were not one of them then credit to you for realising how stupid those comments were.
IM not here to rubbish RJJ at all, I think he was a fabulous fighter to watch someone I would watch anytime I could on TV, but Calzaghe in his PRIME goes the distance for sure with roy
I really wish this fight had happened all those years back , I know for a fact joe wanted it because joe is like most boxers he has a big ego to feed and he knew the kind of fight he needed.
I felt the same about Eubank, Benn, Collins how would they have fared with RJJ, Hopkins Toney etc
Favourably I would say, not saying wins but they would hold their own

Eddie Murphy, the great American comic-actor went over to Britain with the great Sugar Ray Leonard to watch the new "Tyson" whip Joe Calzaghe. Leonard tried to tell Eddie that Joe had some serious boxing skills and Marvelous Marvin Hagler always respected Joe's skillset but everybody in North America except those two great American boxers figured Lacy would just destroy the Welshman. Joe won easily and then spanked Kessler. I remember years ago arguing that Joe could defeat the young lion Kessler but all I got was derisive replies referring to Joe's slappy punches and his arthritic hands. Joe whipped Kessler as decisively as he did the undefeated Lacy. He then whipped Bika, a very underated pugilist and finished his storied career by outfighting two legends in Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. He was an awesome fighter whose reputation will grow in glory as time goes by. Joe had it all, speed, ring intelligence, phenominal workrate and class both in and out of the ring. He badmouthed nobody and always came to fight.

Calzaghe was never the brightest biscuit in the barrel, he didn't have much ring intelligence.

What he had was strength, power, a very good chin, a difficult southpaw stance and awkward slappy style, as well as a lot of heart, a high workrate and very good fitness.

Fabulous fighter who unfortunately due to brittle hands lost some of his punch power, to think there were fights where he broke his hand in early rounds and boxed basically one handed to unanimous decisions is remarkable.
I really wish we got to see him fight RJJ hopkins etc when he was in his prime would have made for great fights.
Calzaghe is seriously underrated on here, lets not forget that after ruling smw for years, unifying he then took on what was seen as the only legitimate fight out there, going up to LHeavy and fighting the then ring champion BHOP he went to bhops own backyard in his first fight at the weight and won.

In other words, what a terrific brawler! I take nothing away, other than some relative comparison.

Uhh more people wanted to see Calzaghe vs Dawson then Hopkins vs Calzaghe. Hopkins was a massive underdog.

Sometimes he could get too involved in a tear up when he had the sklills to box the guys head off, but that was calzaghe he wanted to entertain the fans he admitted that in an interview that he sometimes just loved the tear up.
As for ring intelligence, when calzaghe had his head on right he could find the way to beat a guy, kessler for instance in the early rounds was awkward and was having some success threw bombs at calzaghe and one particular uppercut calzaghe walked staright through and you could see kessler visably drain when he saw his best punch with no effect.
Calzaghe changed tactics mid fight and worked kessler out and took over the fight

Dawson wasnt the name, Hopkins was THE name and the man at LHeavy everyone knew that.
And calzaghe didnt have the time left to wait for that fight to be demanded in future when dawson became THE man at the weight
He knew his time was coming to an end and he had a couple of fights left in him.
Hopkins to beat the ring champion in his own backyard at a new weight and become a two weight world champion and then RJJ the man he always said he wanted to share a ring with years ago.

The slappy style came after the brittle hands issues, before that if you look at his very early fights he used to have great punch power and delivered them properly not open handed slaps
His brittle hands ruined his chances of more KO`s in his career too

Laughable rubbish. Hopkins was using his head as a third arm and using every filthly trick in the book in the first few rounds of their fight. Joe adjusts his style, starts whipping in a great jab, moving his head better laterally and gets dirty. The punk referee was letting Hopkins do his crap but Joe graps Hopkins in a headlock and just starts whipping Bernard with viscious back of the head shots until the ref separated the two men. Ref warns Joe and Joe looks at him like the piece of **** he is and hopkins and the ref knew right then that Joe was the boss. From then on Joe owned that fight and bent Hopkins over and simulated anal ****. Hopkins will never live that down. Joe don't play.

You can tell that their resumes are extremely close due to how many pages this had. If it was so even, then there wouldn't be 8 pages of people arguing back and forth.

Hopkins knew he had to smother calzaghes work or he was history, if he gave calzaghe distance he was playing into calzaghes hands, although the tactic was proof of how Bhop studies his opponents and negates their strengths it also showed a lack of belief that he could actually beat calzaghe. Bhops performance and feigning injury etc that night was nothing short of disgraceful and made for a terrible fight
