Later day 175 Calzaghe (crusher of Jones and Hopkin) vs current Kovalev Who ya gaat?? Was watching the Kovalev Cleverly fight this morning, saw Calzaghe getting animated in the crowd, and couldnt help but think, aye they dont make British fighters like Joe anymore, Zaggers would have thrashed this guy (who reminded me a bit of a prime Kessler)
If old man Hopkins and half dead Roy Jones can put you down then Kovalev is someone you should avoid, which of course Calzaghe would do.
Joe would go nowhere near Kovalev. Nowhere near him. Robin Reid was able to land a straight right at will. Against Kovalev he doesn't make it past 6 round.
I'm a massive fan and I think a prime Calzaghe could havebeaten Ward but if you are talking about the Calzaghe who fought Hopkins and Jones, who was in my opinion not very motivated for those fights which could be seen by that documentary in my opinion he could have been blown away in the first few possibly against Kovalev. Having said that he would still have beaten that version of Cleverly.
you don't think joe was motivated for hopkins? wow, whatever. joe doesn't even take this fight but believe it or not, i probably take calzaghe in this matchup. kovalev has not even come close to fighting someone on joe's level. ward is a different animal all together. prime for prime, ward ud over joe.
Interesting question this. It's hard to say. Kovalev still has too much to prove for me to outright pick him in this fight, but Calzaghe never fought anyone with the combo of skill, power and size of Kovalev. The fanboys will say otherwise, of course, but Calzaghe's 'o' was not earnt against guys like this.
calzaghe, for all his weaknesses, has at least beaten 1 pretty good prime (Kessler), which kovalev hasn't done yet. So the edge has to go to Calzaghe at present. Once Kovalev beats a really good prime or two then yes its safe to say he could beat Joe, which he could do in his next two fights as opposed to taking ten year route that Calzaghe did.
stop trying to add some gloss to those fights. considering he waited until he KNEW jones and Hopkins were past their best and dethroned by someone else, speaks volumes for how he ran his career
he'll only be remembered as one in Britain, and by people who grew up watching him the truth is that having Kessler as your defining victory over a prime, proven world class fighter, when jones and Hopkins were kings for years, will never make him an ATG internationally hes HOF
