I knew **** all about boxing at the time, and this was the fight that got me into it. I was rooting for Calzaghe, but felt Lacy could well win, although, as I say, I knew **** all and was caught up by Lacy's hype.
I'm honest I picked Lacy only because I'd never seen Calzaghe fight and only saw his resume. But if I had seen him fight just once no way in hell would I have picked Lacy.
Jeff Lacy by KO. I had watched Lacy come up over the previous years and was sure he would eventually catch up with Joe Calzaghe(whom I had only seen in highlights). As the saying goes, Calzaghe proved everyone wrong by punishing Lacy for 12 rounds and effectively ending his championship career. Only time will tell if Lacy can ever recover his form prior to his encounter with Calzaghe.
As I've seen a lot of Joe's fights before, I though it's a 50-50 fight, but in favour of the younger, seemingly hungrier and stronger guy. But at least I admit I thought Lacy would win. It seems very few dare to admit it... but what the hell? 99% of the experts thought Lacy would win this one, 75% said it's gonna be easy. I dare to say that most who keep saying that they picked Joe are just lying. I have tons of respect for the rest.
I had only seen JC fight only once before the Lacy fight and he didn't look like much , so Lacy seemed to be logical choice. Boy was i wrong! And Lacy has been ruined ever since.
I thought he showed a lot of heart in taking the beating from Calzaghe. Afterwards, he gave Calzaghe all props and declared that he lost to the better man. Lacy showed championship class - even if it was in agonizing defeat.
I thought Lacy was gonna kill him. But to be honest I never seen Joe fight before then. He mad me a fan and I bought his career collection and I love him ever sense
Im going to be honest , i used to think Calzage was overrated, damn i couldn be more wrong , it was viseversa I remember telling my brother that Lacy was going to K.O. Calzage,,jajajaj Honestly at the time i have never seen Calzage fight before
There are so many liars on here. At the time of the fight, there must have been 3 or 4 people at most who picked Calzaghe. Now it is a 50/50 split. I picked Lacy, but based on the fact I thought Calzaghe was past it. I felt a prime Calzaghe would have been a different matter but that Joe had looked shot against Salem and then very unconvincing against Ashira. I had also underestimated how totally done Robin Reid was and so seeing him battered for the first time in his career (having never been down) suggested Lacy had not good power, but huge power. All in all, I figured Calzaghe would look to fight Lacy like he fought Brewer and Mitchell, stand in a phone box and brawl it out with his speed and output as his way to seek victory. Having looked shop worn against Salem and Ashira, and with Lacys power, I could not see how Lacy would not land enough to end it. It now appears that Calzaghe was quite simply becoming complacent and unmotivated against crap opponents and needed the challenges to be at his best. He had them earlier in his career and had become stagnant fighting hand picked crap like Pudwill. After the Lacy fight it was clear that he was not past it but needed to be interested and threatened by his opponent. Which was why I picked him to beat Kessler, despite Kessler being a level above Lacy, and why I pick him to beat Hopkins and totally dismantle Pavlik should they meet.
