Peter Manfredo was going to become the next superstar in boxing. But when he went to the UK to fight Joe Calzaghe for the world title, he was robbed of his destiny with a stoppage that was the worst i have seen in decades. Calzaghe was a fraud who padded his record with bums and has-beens and couldn't punch. He became a HBO hype job once Roy Jones fell off (they loved these fast showboating fighters).
It was a joke to let Manfredo in there to start with and I take it you’re joking regarding Manfredo. Calzaghe had good wins in his career which admittedly probably could have been better. I’m never really been keen on keyboard warriors calling fighters frauds though.
no Peter manfredo was Not going to become the next superstar. He got exposure from a TV show that had no bearing on the world ratings. Manfredo really had not paid his dues in the division at all. I am sorry. But it was not Manfredos destiny to become a superstar There was a gulf in talent that was not going to be bridged with an appearance on an American reality show. Moments into the fight it looked a mismatch. On paper, before the fight happened it already looked a mismatch. In reality it was an outright mismatch. Manfredo was badly outclassed. The trouble is the SMW division after Jones left it was legitimately dominated by European fighters who were good enough to earn the positions in the rankings and deserve all the belts in that division. Calzaghe outlasted all of them. It would do you some good to recognise this rather than disregard what was going on at that time. Manfredo did not break into that level. And was exposed when he leapfrogged more deserving SMW contenders and belt holders to land that fight. peter did well to get paid more than a flight home.
It was a dreadful stoppage, but had no impact on the winner of the fight. Calzaghe was levels above Manfredy. Though I suspect you know that really.
I'm gonna assume your post is tongue in cheek, because if you lose to Alfonso Gomez chances are your not gonna be the next superstar. And the only robbery was the paying fans who paid for this joke of a fight, yes the stoppage was appalling but the actual match up was even more appalling. Calzaghe also fought Bika during this time who was a very obscure name at the time, and i remember Calzaghe got alot of flack for fighting Bika, Manfredo, and rightly so. Thankfully he eventually did fight Mikkel Kessler, which is the fight everyone wanted to see.
It is a joke . I was torn between doing this one or a 'dream match-up' between Derrick Gainer and Manny Pacquiao - could the Pacman take Gainer's 'unique' body punching which went below the cup and stopped the previously indestructible Freddy Norwood?
