The fact that this is even being discussed is hilarious . Considering that Joe has never ever fought someon on SRR 's level and looked good against them . He barely beats Bernard Hopkins and gets dropped in the process by a fighter who was never known to have KO power and who spent most of his career at middle . Now he will be competeive with the likes of Robinson ? Yeah OK SRR has had more KO 's than Joe has had fights yet this is actually being entertained ? Enough with the circus !
That's a 35/36 year old Joe Calzaghe. Robinson wasn't the same into his mid 30's nor was Calzaghe. More KO's than Joe had fights, whoop de whoop, what an amazing argument. It's not a circus, I have my reasons posted on the previous page as to why this would be a good competitive fight. I have respectable posters on the same wavelength as me, and I'm by no means stupid myself. Robinson is favoured against any LW, WW, JMW, MW that he goes up against in a fantasy fight, and he's favourite here against Calzaghe, but there are clear logical reasons to show that this fight is not a cakewalk for Ray, no matter what some (for want of a better word) 'Historians' may think.
I hate to say it, but if old Robinson had problems with Fulmer, just size and speed put Joe C in a league to face old middleweight Sugar Ray. Fulmer was tough as nails but his jab was damned primordial: it should have almost been illegal, more like a chop. This guy beat Sugar Ray? Well, only an old past it middleweight sugar ray. Prime Joe C has a good shot against old shot middleweight Ray, because Fulmer and guys like him, if they were the same size naturally fighting prime welterweight Ray Robinson, would never have had a chance. Fulmer is a technical monstrosity, and while his toughness has immortalized him (and his win over old old Ray Robiinson) that style was archaic and, in my opinion, less effective than the unorthodoxy of Calzaghe.
and remember: most super middles nowadays are bigger than Billy conn because they can dehydrate to make weight the day before, much much bigger men than someone who had to weigh 160 on fight night.
calzaghe is unbeatable no matter who he is matched with ... 47 tried ... 47 failed only Valero could have a virtual chance to knock him out cold in the first round
Calzaghe may be 25 to 30lbs heavier than Robinson on fightnight. Joe keeps him honest. People talk like getting punched by Calzaghe wouldn't hurt and that's just ignorant. Decent pop and plenty of activity would keep Ray honest.
MAN I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS ****ING STUPID THREAD!!!!! AAARRRRRGGGHHH WHO IN THE **** EVEN RANKS CALSLAPPY IN THE TOP 100? Who in the **** said the fight would be at smw or LHW? SMW was not a real division when SRR was around so lets Joe fights like a ***** and would not last in battles back in the day at LHW so he would be fight at MW and would get his ass whooped in 3 rounds by SRR . . . if he made it that far. The only way joe would win is if they fought today! **** stupid idiots on this god damn thread.
Decent pop against who ? A shot Eubank or journeyman Byron Mitchell ? Please ,he's not even annoying Robinson !But I know its just nostalgia ..
He's not a KO artist, but he's not a weak puncher. When you factor in how much heavier he'd be than SRR it's clear that he'll carry some pop in his punches.
Sure until I have seen anything from Calzaghe that suggets he carries a real punch @ 168 im not buying any theory that he will have enough to keep Robinson honest ..And I know you will bring up the hand issue . But lets play devils advocote ,how do you rate Robinson's boxing ability ?
the key to his success was his ability to match fights at right times against the right name. ohh and some gift decisions / stoppages. clearly the great white hype.
No sir, I wouldn't mention the hand issue. Calzaghe actually became a better fighter after his hand problems, he relied more on IQ and Boxing ability rather than heavy hands. My main point for power is that he'd be 25 or more pounds bigger than Robinson, mass can be a key concept in punching power. Robinson was an outstanding Boxer, he had a ring IQ far ahead of his time. He was brilliant at mid-range, very good at range, and decent enough at in fighting. (Though I've previously posted that he could be out muscled.) He'd occasionally make mistakes while moving to his right, but with Calzaghe being a southpaw, Boxing law would dictate Robinson move to his left, so that wouldn't be an issue. Again, I'm not making a case for Calzaghe to win, I'm really not, but Ray is the smaller man, the physically weaker man, he's outweighed, and has shorter arms. Calzaghe's extra weight will ensure that there's enough in his punches to stop SRR grinning and walking through them. Calzaghe would be competitive, I'm adamant.
add to that srr is a corpse (no disrespect) and it sounds like classic calzahge criteria for opponent selection.
