He didnt say he waited till it was safe to fight Jones at all. He was often calling out Jones. Jones had other plans and didnt want to face Calzaghe, but that was down to Jones having other ideas, not Calzaghes fault Jones didnt want it
I here theres a long list of famous fighters who tipped Jones to beat Calzaghe when they fought. Do you have access to that list Bailey? Just shows how its easy to be wise after the event.
a prime calzaghe busts ward up and stops him in 5 one sided rounds. there is no ****ing way for ward to win. joe closes the distance real quick and goes to work on him. a past prime calzaghe beats ward by a pretty wide UD. ward's cheating and holding won't help him in this one.
Where have you been for the last 12 years that you think Calzaghe doesn't get hated on? And, I think it pretty ridiculous to say that Calzaghe's got no chance of beating Ward. Ward's opposition hasn't been of noticably better quality than Calzaghe's, there's no one Ward beat that Calzaghe wouldn't beat, and Calzaghe beat a fighter in Hopkins who used a similar style to Ward where as Ward has never fought anyone with Calzaghe's level of stamina or shere punch out-put (call them slaps all you want, they still counted on points every time). Its fine if you think Ward would win - the case can be made - but its ludicrous to say that Calzaghe would have no chance of winning - it would be a close fight whoever won.
He said Jones was no longer a great fighter and beating him would mean nothing. That combined with the previous comment about not wanting Roy because he was a good fighter and he wanted big money not tough fights, it is pretty much a fact that he waited until it was safe. Fighting that version of Roy was a chance to get big money, without a tough fight, just a name of a once great... And that is exactly what he did. Calzaghe did nothing to get a prime Jones in the ring, nothing.. It is a fact, that Joe did not want any of Roy when he was relevant. He made statements that spoke pretty loudly about not wanting to fight him, but his actions spoke louder, he did nothing.
Videos of prime Roy literally scared the **** out of the young kid.. Calzaghe comforting him was the truth.. Roy wasn't that good anymore.. Calzaghe stated that on more than that occasion.. Blinded fanboys need to get their head out of their ass... Roy was a shell of himself, Joe knew it.
Calzaghe always found a way to win, even when the underdog, which marks him out as one of the greats. Calzaghe on points
One question I've asked many times that no-one ever even attempts to answer, is if all Calzaghe threw were 'slaps', how come no-one walked through them, even guys with solid chins like Bhop? Calzaghe is a victim of his own lack of ambition and British refereeing, but I can't recall a single 'British' stoppage where Joe was not clearly on top and just because Joe went after the money, it doesn't mean he didn't possess the skills to be a great. He beat a far better and undefeated version of Kessler than Ward did, and in some style, and guys like Froch were still domestic/continentental level before Calzaghe reached his cashing out stage. As to the topic, Calzaghe by a wide decision. Ward is a great boxer and technician, but Joe was greater fighter and his work-rate alone would win him a lot of rounds, and no way on Earth is Andre knocking him out.
Ward comfortable decision. Ward can replicate what Hopkins did but add more stamina and a higher volume of punches with greater athleticism. Besides workrate Ward is certifiably superior in every other area Slappy Joed resume is laughable
Do you think it is possible that those famous fighters who picked shot Jones didn't think quite as highly of Calzaghe as you do? He was fresh off of a controversial split decision victory, looked horrible against Hopkins and was dropped in the process.. That doesn't mean Roy was anywhere near prime.. No one picking Roy thought he was prime, they thought he had a punchers chance, Hopkins dropped Joe, Roy always had more power than B.Hop.. People tend to give once great fighters unrealistic chances because of who they are and what they have done... That is the sign of a great fighter amongst other fighters. Doesn't mean Calzaghe beat a good version of Roy.
Lets have a look Lets remember that Jones, Calzaghe was viewed as a bigger better fight than Hopkins, Pavlik and many predicted Jones to win Bet you didnt disagree with all these so called experts before the fight Hindsight is one thing, but look at the facts, the Ring LHW champ beat The Ring #6 in a fight many expected him to lose. It was a big fight at the time but now Calzaghe clearly won, they say Jones was shot Bernard Hopkins- Former two-division world champion Fought Joe Calzaghe on April 19, 2008 and lost by split decision Fought Roy Jones Jr. May 22, 1993 and lost by unanimous decision “Jones by unanimous decision based on his speed and power.” Lennox Lewis- Former heavyweight champion "Jones has unbelievable speed and Calzaghe's never fought anyone like him. Jones likes it when his opponent comes to him and unfortunately for Calzaghe, that's exactly what he does; comes to his opponent and is right in their face. I pick Jones on points, but I think it’ll be a very close fight." Jeff Lacy- Former IBF super middleweight champion Fought Joe Calzaghe March 4, 2006 and lost by unanimous decision “It’s going to be a hard fight to pick. If Jones doesn't stay on the ropes and give Calzaghe angles and lots of movement I'm going to go with Jones by decision. Roy can't stay on the ropes and give Joe the chance to throw his slapping punches. This is a great fight for Jones to win and setup a big money fight again with Hopkins!” Glen Johnson- Former IBF, IBO and Ring Magazine light heavyweight champion Fought Roy Jones September 25, 2004 and won by KO in 9th round “Roy Jones will win. I believe Calzaghe fights an amateur style. He throws a lot of slappy punches. Roy throws much more meaningful punches. In general, Calzaghe will throw more punches than Roy, but Roy’s will be harder hitting. Unless the judges are blind, they will see that the harder punches make Jones the winner. They should see that Roy Jones’ hard-hitting punches make the difference.” Vernon Forrest - WBC welterweight champion “Roy Jones is still the best fighter in my era and still arguably one of the best fighters period. Roy with his speed can match Calzaghe, and he has power. So the power and speed is with Roy. Roy by decision.” Paulie Malignaggi- Former IBF junior welterweight champion. "It's a hard fight to pick. I thought Calzaghe at first because, but maybe he's too much for Roy right now. But based on what Joe just said about the three Brits beating the three Americans (Calzaghe-Jones, Hatton-Malignaggi, Haye-Barrett), I'm pulling Roy home.....Jones by decision." Winky Wright- Former world junior middleweight champion “I think Roy is going to win. I think that his punches are going to be sharper than Calzaghe’s and I think that Roy is a harder puncher. I think it might go all 12 rounds, but if somebody gets stopped I think its Calzaghe late in the fight.” Dan Rafael- ESPN.com “Although Calzaghe is the favorite, I think Jones' style and speed -- he's still fast -- are going to give him problems. I think it will be a tough, close fight but I'm going with the upset special. I like Jones to pull it out on a close decision.” Gordon Marino- Wall Street Journal ”Jones over Calzaghe. This is a fascinating fight. Jones is still quick and with his awkward style and dangerous punching power is able to freeze very active opponents like Calzaghe. I'm picking Jones by a decision.” Tim Smith- New York Daily News “Roy Jones has good power and I think that will offset the volume of punches that Calzaghe throws. Calzaghe has a good chin so I don't see him getting knocked out. I like Jones in a decision.” Franklin McNeil- Newark Star Ledger “On paper, Calzaghe should not have much difficulty getting by Jones. Calzaghe is a southpaw, and Jones has had his most difficult outings against non-orthodox fighters. And though each man has quite a few miles on his tires, Jones has logged a bit more. The physical edge goes to Calzaghe, but stylistically Jones’ constant movement could prove to be beneficial. If Jones can control the pace, make Calzaghe miss, score with counter shots and his stamina holds up, he will win. Jones wins by decision.” Bobby Cassidy- Newsday “I like Roy Jones in the 11th round TKO. Calzaghe does not have the power to keep Jones honest. I think by the second half of the fight Jones will be picking him a part. Calzaghe looked so good against Hopkins because Hopkins didn't have the firepower to slow him down. But Jones has both speed and power. In other fights, Calzaghe has been able to adjust to one of those assets; he won't be able to adjust to both, especially from a fighter like Jones.” There are were more predictions for Jones against Calzaghe, that picked Jones as a winner. Although there were many that also picked for Calzaghe the poll on Bunces boxing was said 60% in favour of Jones. Amazing how all thses people claim Jones was shot yet cant explain the post below. People say Roy was shot when Calzaghe beat him but show me where he was so different there to when he failed a test against R Hall and where the hand speed was so different. The difference was Jones was facing someone who could match him for speed and had a bit more ring generalship. Hall couldnt close the gaps like Calzaghe also Calzaghes foot movement was causing Jones problems You Tube You Tube No doubt there will be some that say well if you cant tell the difference, but let them explain. Nobody can tell me the difference in Jones, but you can see the difference between Calzaghe and Hall and that seemed to make a big difference
Joe was a LH fighting in a SMWs body. He wouldn't move up when Traver was the only option for him as he had no bargining chips at the weight to get a big fight. He still never won a championship title there is only a 1 weight world champ.
