Well it nearly happened>>>>> http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/4238560.stm Needless to say that this would of been a great fight for Joe. PVP wise.... This is something that Hopkins would pulled and he did in 2007 in a REAL STINKER. ( fighting smaller men trying to climb the mythical USA PVP# ladder, ala Felix and Oscar ) Winky was hot property at the time, 49-3-0 and ranking as high as #2 PVP !!!! Having beaten Trinidad atsch and Sam Soliman atschto a UD. But rightly or wrongly, Joe had his destiny with Lacy. And after destroying one Saint Petersburg boy, the other one most probably didnt want any of it.atsch The fight could of been great and probably would of ended with in a wide UD margin for Sir joe. Winky wouldnt be able to dent that cast iron chin of Sir Joe, who would of walked through all the counters and delivered a barrage of left hands that would make Winky cry. In turn this would of propelled Joe to PVP#5 at least if not higher. How do you guys have this fight? This content is protected 5'11" - 168lb - 73" reach - southpaw- PVP#12+ (2005) This content is protected 5'10.5" - 160lb - 72" Reach - southpaw - PVP#2 (2005)
Winky didn't really do anything of note north of middle so it's a bit of a moot point, but for dicussion's sake,he did do well against aggressive come forward guys, staying behind a solid guard and picking off with the jab,but again,he seemed to fight differently in the latter part of his career(weight perhaps?) so maybe he would be easier for Calzaghe at 168. I don't know if he could stop Calzaghe being busy(unless we're talking 154 Winky) and JC would score a lot,but I do think Winky could hurt him for short periods in several rounds. It's so hard to call a fight where one guy is too far north of his best weight,so I reckon Calzaghe could get a decision, but take a few scares along the way. But he never faced anyone quite like Winky.
I was looking at some of Calzaghe's record and I couldn't see an opponent who brought the unique problems Winky would. I do mean stylistically. It's not an attempt to be derogatory to Calzaghe.
Calzaghe all day. He's naturally much bigger and I think his style is all wrong for Winky. Winky was happy to hold up that high guard and wait for his opponent to stop punching before getting to work. I can't think of a worse guy to do that to than Calzaghe, who would happily run off about 100 punches against his guard. He wouldn't land much cleanly but combined with the fast-hands in centre-ring and being able to out-muscle Winky, I think Joe wins a wide decision.
calzage all day, too big a weight advantage. if the question is who is the superior fighter then its obviously winky, joe was largely workrate, high vol/low hit.
