Calzaghe vs Woods Is In The Works!

Exactly, **** I reckon Clinton Woods is a better Light-Heavy than Hopkins. Hopkins has done incredibly well at Light-heavy, but who did he beat? Oh right, Tarver and Winky, both old not the sorta guys who throw a lot of punches. Great fighters, but not guys notorious for throwing thousands of punches.

Against those types of fighters, even exceptionally gifted fighters like Winky, Hopkins has the know-how and experience to squeeze out victories. But he's chosen his opponents wisely, he's deliberately picking guys who dont have huge workrate coz at 42 years old he knows he cant match that. Calzaghe would beat Hopkins because Hopkins is too old and would be totally outworked for most of the fight.

Woods IS the kinda of fighter who will throw lots of punches, and trade, and not try and coast to close UD wins in chessmatch type fights. Even though he's not in Hopkins' league in terms of talent or achievement, his style and his workrate would mean that Hopkins would have a difficult time with Woods, just like he would Calzaghe.

Woods NEVER gets the respect he deserves, right now I can only see Chad Dawson beating him at Light-Heavy. Hopkins and Erdei, close call but I'd favour Woods.

 

Your logic has fallen to pieces. If Calzaghe is the monster you say, how could Dawson possibly be "risking it all" by fighting him. If he loses, he lost to an ATG while he was a little green, and he has everything to gain if he wins.

Unless you want to argue that Calzaghe would Lacy him, but that seems extremely unlikely in a JC/CD bout. Kessler isn't ruined, and Dawson wouldn't be, either.

Dawson already has beaten an undefeated fighter who had established toughness and power at 175, plus an aging (but still decent) workhorse in Harding.

Personally, I think Woods is my second-most preferred fight for Calzaghe. Hopkins, Tarver and Jones should not be in the conversation. I understand why Bernard is, because he has solid (name) wins over the past couple years.

But Woods is a good, solid fighter who's been a stalwart within the division. It also sets up a potential Dawson fight, if Chad can unify or get a high-profile win. I really wish he could make his way to HBO.

 

I realize they were trying to get their name out there to a certain extent. But rest assured, Dawson and his team would love to sign a contract against JC.

His manager made a thread on boxrec when Drews pulled out calling out Calzaghe (so obviously he's not the sharpest tool in the shed, making threads on a british forum to stir up interest in a boxing match..)

Dawson's team, as with all Gary Shaw fighters, are always in "cash-out" mode, ie taking the biggest money fights regardless of risk. Rarely will you see them protect a fighter for too long without looking to make the biggest fights out there happen. For a talented fighter such as Dawson this may be the best type of promoter/management possible.

Mark my words, unless Shaw pulls a complete 360, as soon as Calzaghe looks Dawson's way, the fight will be a done deal.

 

True but he's had some bad layoffs recently. Tarver has a solid mix of speed and power, and he isn't all that much older than Woods.

Drews is a technical southpaw, at 6'5 he'd make it a tough night for Joe, but would ultimately lose a UD (as will Woods), even in Germany.

 

Hopkins isn't old -- he's ancient. More to the point, he is severely declined. Calzaghe is only slightly declined, perhaps in a similar spot as Hopkins around 2002.

Tarver is shot. Winky is badly faded and was too heavy. Name wins, and all credit to Hopkins for taking the fight out of both guys, but he hasn't beaten a talented, near-prime fighter in a long time. The last time he faced a young gun, he dropped two decisions to Jermain Taylor, a profoundly inferior fighter to Calzaghe.

Tarver is shot. No legs, and poor stamina. He would have been stopped by Jones in their third fight, but Jones happens to be more shot than him.

But has Calzaghe ever acknowledged that Dawson exists? At all?

 

I think he's better than what he showed in his last fight. He's declined very similarly to Jones over the years (which is why I give him some credit for those wins). Keep in mind that Woods isn't exactly in his prime anymore either.

 

Not to my knowledge. Can't say I blame him, Dawson isn't exactly a household name yet and is a big risk.

 

There's nothing wrong with this fight being made if Calzaghe has 2 more after it , the problem comes if he fights Woods and his next fight is his last .

Fighting Woods gives him a title , and would add to his legacy(sure Woods isn't an ATG but he's top 3 imo at Light-Heavy) .

 

Given the trifecta of Jones III, Hopkins and Muruqi, I feel pretty confident Tarver is finished. He hasn't impressed me at all since Johnson II.

Woods may be aging, but he seems to still have some fight in him. Tarver appears to be going through the motions.

 

I think out of everyone out there Hopkins is the biggest threat to Joe i cant see Pavlik,Woods,Taylor,or Dawson beating him....

 

Yes I think you have a point. I can't see Dawson risking going the same way as Lacy before he's made some serious dollars first. I have always doubted Hopkins will sign anyway, and now calzaghe has called Borenard's bluff by agreeing to fight him in America, he'll have to price himself out of negotiations to duck Joe once again. Woods seems the most likely option to me. I'd obviously have JC as favourite but Woods is vastly improved the last 2-3 years and with fighters stepping up in weight you just never know!!:huh
