fighter in the past 30 years by far and a top ten guy for that same era. Probably would have lost to Hopkins back in 2005 but B-Hop didn't take the fight. Kessler and Lacy were never the same after fighting him. Underrated in my opinion and I'm American.
Calzaghe's essentially a poor man's Harry Greb. Ironically enough, alot of people hated Greb's style at the time, too. Thing is, when you utilize angles and workrate like they did, you don't need a ton of power to make it work. As I posted in the other Calzaghe thread...despite not having the knockouts, how many people have walked through his shots to execute their own gameplan?
Lalonde had a mullet though. He looked very silly, even in the late eighties. No way Joe loses someone with that kind of cut!:nono
Skin color means nothing really, it's just... SKIN COLOR. It doesn't guarantee elite status or whatever, natural abilities is what matters. There are as many black tomato cans as whites or whatever, it means nothing.
He's not even close to being one of top 10 fighters of the last 30 years, though you could argue he's the best white fighter of that time period. Damn.
Come on man, Calzaghe's punch style is a popular one and used a lot, successfully, in the amateurs. Who expected to see Lacy wobbled/stunned/hurt in the OPENING ROUND?, all expected Calzaghe to be out or at least down in round one yet it was Lacy wobbled from Calzaghe's punches. Calzaghe's power is underrated and I don't understand why, when he commits to his punches he WILL hurt his opponent. An amateur gold medalist that reminds me a lot of Calzaghe's punching style is Yermakhan Ibraimov, the same guy who beat Jermain Taylor in the semi finals. In all boxing it all depends on how you throw your punches and how you feel most comfortable throwing them. Not all look the same throwing punches and Calzaghe's resume proves his way of throwing punches was successful. Let's face it, who made Hopkins look that confused EVER?, no one. Against Jones he looked helpless because he couldn't do anything to Jones' speed/movement yet against Calzaghe he looked clueless, he just didn't know what to expect and what to counter with.
So, if we bring racial divide back into play in boxing, Calzaghe is the best fighter of the last 30 years. Interesting. Do we really need equality?
