I think it will be competitive until around the 5th round with Hopkins countering loads while Joe gets impatient and gets square on. Then Joe will get his jab going and cut the ring off, get inside where its rough and catch Hopkins with combinations out of the clinches and take control of the fight with his fitness and punch output in later rounds. 115-113 Calzaghe
Nice to see some proper analysis & I can see why you think Joe will win. I see a similair score the other way. It will be close although I could see him getting knocked down Kabary Salem style where he will not be at all hurt but just off balance. If that happens the fight could really change, we'd see Joe really trying to force the action & all the time Hopkins sticking to his game plan & frustrating Joe further.
I belive you can rule out a count a ko victory here based on both fighters look at the Kos of Hopkins his last Ko vicotry was 4 years ago against oscar de la hoya in 2004 and look at cazaghes last ko was against mario veit in 2005 since then he had a premature stoppage against manfredo! which was very premature stoppage! Joe really relies on work rate flowing flurries to the body and head and very fast pace! this is what he will have to use to win! will the weight be an disadvantage to joes speed , Joe has got a great ability of brawling in trouble so i see alot of this happening when he belives he is not connecting and hopkins will be frustrating him all night with counter rights while keeping his stamina to a limit! as hopkins will fight with caution moving on the back foot while keepin in range so calzaghe doesnt bully the fight , while for hopkins to win he really needs to frustrate joe in the first 6 rounds then to take adavntage of the openings joe will leave when he starts slugging, like i always say this is such a close fight to chose!
I really don't think he will dominate Hopkins, but I see him winning a close UD. JC has great workrate, stamina and good head and body movement as well. I do think he gets anxious sometimes by throwing wide punches and leaves himself open a little, but still Hopkins fighting style (throwing 1 or 2 punches and clinching) will prove to be unpredicable for JC. There will be a lot of clinching and I don't see Hopkins doing like Kessler did, trying to beat JC by outboxing him and staying in front of him. But then again JC has a great stamina and is also a very smart fighter, so he has the tools to beat Hopkins.
Kessler lacked the smarts to do the right thing when Joe started to get on top. Hopkins simply won't stand for that. If Joe gets into some sort of rhythm, Bernard is going to do everything he can to knock him out of it. Whether that is legal or not doesn't matter to Hopkins, all he knows is that he needs to frustrate Calzaghe and break up anything that he tries to put together. If Joe can stop the clinches by stepping out of range and keeping Hopkins at the end of a well timed jab every so often, he'll be very successful in this fight. But if he dives in because Hopkins' power isn't concerning him and macho Joe takes over, it's going to be a **** fight and one that plays into Hopkins' hands. Joe needs to box his head off for 8 rounds or so, then and only then can he start taking a few chances.
I am gonna have to disagree with you for once mate. If an opponent is stood there throwing nothing back while recieving a billion shots, the ref is doing the right thing by stopping the fight. It's not worth risking a fighter's health. And it's all Manfredo's fault anyway. There's no way he should be complaining (which he did). If he thinks he can step into a ring with Calzaghe and do absolutely nothing, he is an idiot and he deserves a stoppage.
I believe it will be a clear cut victory....Hop is crafty enough to win a few rounds but it won't be a complete and total domination. You'll see what age does to fighters against someone who is younger and their equal.
Well looking at your own posting history it would seem the only one incapable of discussing anything that isn't Calzaghe-Hopkins-related is you.
Fact is that Hopkins is depleted, and lacks the energy or the skills to combat Calzaghe's offense. By the way, Ive always liked Hopkins, but facts is facts.
I think this will be a boring fight. Calzaghe is going to dominate the old Hopkins. It will be seen as a great victory. Then, I hope he fight for a couple of years and achieves the 49-0 or 50-0 record.
