In all honesty Joe don't need Pavlik as much as Pavlik need's Joe.
I say Calzaghe does the Jones Jr. Fight and retires.
(Jones is the one fighter from his era that people often critzised both for)

If both stay undefeated then I hope Pav gets his shot at him.

Good post. I don't see what the big deal is for Pavlik to move up from a weight class he wants to unify and dominate to go to 168. A lot of fans just want to see Joe lose and feel that Pavlik has what it takes. What if Pavlik loses? Joe will get the last laugh and retire undefeated. Remember, Pavlik has not been champ for too long and has battled only a few good opponents. Give him time to grow. Pavlik would surely jump in the ring to fight Joe tomorrow for the fans. The weights make a difference whether some think Joe slaps or not.

I don't think Calzaghe will fight Pavlik. And I can't blame him, Joe is well past his best and the fight would be a lot closer than it would have been two years ago. I think a couple of years ago Calzaghe would have beateb Pavlik by a wide UD, not now. I think if the fight took place in April of next year, I think it would be very close maybe a split decision, although I would 100% back Calzaghe before the fight, as a Calzaghe fan but my heart would be racing.
It would be massive risk for him to take so late in his career. :deal

    No, you're not wrong.

This coming from a boxing fan who isn't neccesarily a fan of Calzaghe's, but you have everything in perspective. Ultimately it is Joe Calzaghe's decision on who he fights, and he wouldn't get much respect in beating Pavlik anyhow, so I can see where he is coming from. Secure a big pay day and move on from there.

Still, I agree with you also in that I think Joe will fight Pavlik no matter what. Joe is obsessed with his legacy, and he'll realise sooner or later that Pavlik is probably more a legacy fight than Hopkins was. Sure, nobody on Eastside Boxing will give him credit for Pavlik, they'd just say Pavlik was overrated, but hardcore fans will know that he just beat an hungry, elite and young champion, making Joe a three weight world champion. All of a sudden, Kessler, Hopkins, and Pavlik becomes quite impressive reading on his resume.

I'm of the opinion that he deserves respect for the Hopkins win because the man was coming off wins against P4P rated fighters (Tarver and Winky). It's never mentioned, but Jermain Taylor (the reason Pavlik is being hyped today) was unable to defeat Winky, but Hopkins beat him...and then Calzaghe beat Bernard. Doesn't mean much, but Pavlik fans are quite to bring up the fact that Hopkins failed to beat Jermain Taylor and somehow that is relevant in a Pavlik vs Calzaghe matchup.

Goodluck to Joe Calzaghe and Kelly Pavlik, no matter what happens.

Well if Calzaghe insists on fighting RJJ next:

Pavlik should move up in weight, granted Kessler wins come this Saturday. If Kessler wins, there should be a match-up between Pavlik-Kessler. If Pavlik wins (I think he has a good shot) against Kessler, and Joe can get past RJJ, Joe and Kelly should meet up for a super fight at 168.

I will not be happy if Calzaghe does not face Pavlik before he retires.

Joe is a victim of his own mouth. Very few people would criticise joe for fighting on the senior circuit if he hadn't called Pavlik out about 80 bazillion times. Let him fight Roy, and then do boxing a favor; GO AWAY.

It's always the way with Joe Calzaghe. Whenever he wins a fight, all the rats come out of the woodwork claiming "such and such a guy would K JC TFO" or "Why is Joe ducking this guy", then when he does fight and beat them, all the rats go scurrying back in to the woodwork to pretend that they never said those things and look for a new hero to champion against Joe ,,, like their new great white hope .. a weight drained SMW/LHW in Pavlik who's fought 1 big name twice and an old McKart.

Amazing how many people were predicting he would be too much for Jeff Lacy now, isn't it?

and if he's beaten by a young hungry Kelly Pavlik, will Roy Jones still want to fight him or will the money and interest still be in the match-up?

i reckon he knows he is going to fight pavlik.he has taken the money fight with jones now and while people rant and rave about pavlik the more the fight is going up in value as the fans want it more and more.
thats when he will fight him.
