He is geting older so why not fight him first? I think Joe is running scared of a beating.

I am not hearing him saying he wants Pavlik. He is talking about leaving boxing forever after the Jones fight. Nice avatar BTW.

Joe Calzaghe thinks he can beat anyone. He talks like he is the be all and end all of boxing these days, some sort of super champ, whether he is or not is up to his performances in the ring and the fans.

The reasons he is fighting Jones is simple - lots of money and an easy win (so he thinks) whilst still being able to say it is a "legitimate" fight (and not a farce) since he got Roy beat Tito.

Joe is picking the semi retired guys for good money right now, and why not. He been fighting stiffs for years with the odd live opponent thrown in!

his legacy is on the line...If I was Calzaghe, I too wouldn't want 15 years of work ending via 1st round KO.:yep

I guess the fact Jones is apparently past it, and lost his prime years ago, is no aknowledgement of how great Calzaghe is that at 37, people are still hoping beyond hope someone can beat him, yet they want Pavlik who is 10yrs his junior to fight him and not talk about how Joe is semi retired? Jones and Hopkins are old men now apparently... but Joe is the Peter Pan of boxing... that or the fact that form is temporary and class is permanent, maybe Jones and Hopkins were never as good as Joe, which is why people always expect Joe to beat them and never take into account his age.

ENGLISH_TITAN, do you know the hallmark of the second-rater? It’s resentment of another man’s achievement. Those touchy mediocrities who sit trembling lest someone’s work prove greater than their own- they have no inkling of the loneliness that comes when you reach the top. The loneliness for an equal – for a mind to respect and an achievement to admire. They bare their teeth at you from out of their rat holes, thinking that you take pleasure in letting your brilliance dim them – while you’d give a year of your life to see a flicker of talent anywhere among them. They envy achievement, and their dream of greatness is a world where all men have become their acknowledged inferiors. They don’t know that that dram is the infallible proof of midocrity, because that sort of world is what the man of achievement would not be able to bear. They have no way of knowing what he feels when surrounded by inferiors – hatred? No, not hatred, but boredom, the terrible, hopeless, draining, paralyzing boredom. Of what account are praise and adulation from men whom you don’t respect? Have you ever felt the longing for someone you could admire? For something not to look down at, but up to?

Of the many ideals which in youth gave life a meaning and radiance missing from the chilly perspectives of middle age, one at least has remained with me as bright and satisfying as ever before – the shameless worship of heroes. In an age that would level everything and reverence nothing, I take my standing with Victorian Carlyle, and light my candles, like Mirandola before Plato’s image, at the shrines of great men…For why should we stand reverent before waterfalls and mountain tops, or a summer moon on a quiet sea, and not before the highest miracle of all – a man who is both great and good?

Even if he does retire after Jones does it really mean he's scared of a beating?
No way does he retire after Jones, why else is Pavlik fighting Hopkins? it's because i guess they're HOPING he beats him more convincingly to hype the fight more, so it will be worth a lot more come fight time in summer 09, this I'm sure of.

Joe's winding down his career. Get used to the fact that he's not going to be taking on Pavlick, or anyone else on the rise. Joe has already done everything he's going to do in boxing.

I would say so. He aint getting any younger and fighting a young gun like Pavlik is gonna be tough for him at this stage of his career. Well, if he doesnt fight Pavlik after Jones we will know the truth.

Pavlik is the type of fighter that Calzaghe has breezed through in his career. Why would he be scared to face him?

A much better fight would be Pavlik vs. Kessler.
