Calzaghe would have beaten any of the past Middleweight greats.

Never seen Greb or Ryan fight. Having seen Fitz and D'Arcy I've seen at least 15 who look better on film to me.

Burley beating Calzaghe wouldn't surprise me but I give Joe the edge, just about.

Gibbons can make people miss in the pocket but doing that to a man throwing a 1000 punches, when you don't have the power to keep him off you, that is a stretch and Gibbons is one of the best fighters I've ever watched.

Well your list is yours to make mate. Darcy looks pretty impressive on film but you also have to realize all films from that far back make fighters look a lot worse than they really were, Hagler and Roy Jones Junior and all the more modern fighters would look worse than they do now, all that jittering jumping film was actually played at a different speed and what we see is these films being played on more modern equipment that does not play the films at proper speed, if you get any Darcy film and slow them right down you will see there are nowhere near as many frames per second as films of twenty years later ie 1936.

Fitz suffers even more as he is filmed nearly twenty years BEFORE Darcy.

I'd say it's a pretty important issue seeing as between the three of them, only one of them ventured above 160lb, once, and lost. Asking how many bigger men they beat is a valid question, since they're going up against a fighter a full weight class bigger. Asking how many smaller all-time greats Calzaghe beat is stupid.

You say Calzaghe struggled with anyone who could counterpunch. Whenever Robinson fought a good middleweight who was durable, strong and awkward, he either lost or struggled. Little Carmen Basilio would be too small to even fight Calzaghe. Hows Robby going to handle a "very great fighter" who is durable and awkward, a southpaw as well, and a full weight class bigger than the guys he was struggling with? Likewise Monzon was adept at utilising his physical advantages to break down his usually smaller opponents. Against Calzaghe he'd be the smaller man in the ring, a different proposition.

That's not to say they can't beat Calzaghe. Obviously they could. I just see it as a tall order for them given their size and the men they were used to facing, and in the absence of them handling light-heavies of any description, let alone tough, smart, active southpaw light-heavies.

He`s already beaten 2 on that list and don`t give me that "but in their prime sh!te. JC would have boxed the ears of Hagler and Toney, too much speed and skill easily.

Not a valid question when you already know the answer. And my question was the same as yours but reversed.

After his retirement, sure, but during his prime, not imo.

Regardless, I wouldn't describe Calzaghe as someone he would handle. I would describe as someone who leaves enough openings that someone with the right combination of power, speed and anticipation can land solid shots. His style will give anyone in history fits. Who wants to face someone who's throwing 1000 punches knowing you probably won't knock them out, knowing it's gonna be a 12 round struggle? But do I think those I've mentioned can take 7 rounds from Joe with hard accurate punching, yes I do.

"Prime" is an excuse, usually made b y yanks when one of there greats is beaten by a non American fighter. Could have, would have, should have are meaningless in boxing. Lacy whupped, Jones whupped, Hopkins whupped - no speculation , facts. :D

Calzaghe is one of the best middleweights of all time, I don't hesitate to say that. He was one boxer who was very conscious of point-scoring to victory.

When was his "prime"? How long did his "prime" last?
