I'm not sure Joe's sorry ass would have beaten Griffin.

My sentiments exactly, drives me up the wall.

On another note, remember that a young Calzaghe had power. He only started to pitter-pat once his hands gave out on him.

James would have dominated and KOd Joe. Simple as that. Joe never had the type of athletic talent that could avoid being hit by the best. Joe benefited from only fighting one decent opponent all the way up to 2008 [and these two ATGs were way past it and in their 40s] and he struggled mightily with a weight cutting past peak Chris Eubank at that. Joe was good .. not even close to extraordinary - but he is overrated (around here) because the comparative is the local, domestic, regional, and dismal fare he fought in his career. If Joe had had to fight better athletes post-Eubank he wouldn't have reached his mid-30s with a pristine chin. If you fight guys that can't land because they aren't exceptional then you remain in tact. No one who has watched him edge rather modest talent and a couple old men would ever put him in the class of legitimate greats who fought other prime fighters.

Joe's overrated but it is obviously an ESB thing - "demographic" love from the posting population - not objectivity and without a discerning "athlete" perspective.

James would have landed the punch Joe couldn't see coming inevitably and every time they fought. The impact of this kind of defeat on a younger Calzaghe would have guaranteed he could not have been the same fighter later. Frank and Joe's careful opponent selection insured an on-going concern - and that was the correct objective. Striving for real (ring) greatness was never contemplated - that kind of illusion is only evident in fan boy posts.

This is a 1 out of 100 post on this forum. You made more than one valid point about the original topic and didn't call anyone a homosexual or denigrate a specific race or nationality while doing. I award you the ESB Medal of Honor.

According to the logic employed by Slappy joe backers Danny Green is now an all time great and favored over X, Y, and Z fighters because he is has beaten Jones, Manny Siaca, and Otis Griffin.

IMO prime Toney eats Calzaghe up.

Joe would need a very fast bike for that fight.

A prime Joe, beats him on a UD. No question.

Toney was great, but he also gut very lucky against Tiberi, lost to Tadzi, Joe would slap both of them silly. Joe's style would be difficult for anyone. Counterpunching against someone who doesn't stop throwing punches and reacts to being hit with more aggression like Joe did would be quite a challenge for Toney. I see this as a close fight, not a murder by any means.

i agree with this. joe might deserve criticism for his career path but you have to respect his boxing ability. it's just that he wasted it.

Calzaghe would have outboxed Toney. Roy Jones out boxed Toney as well.

Depends what year as to stoppage or not but I don't think Toney would handle the footwork or speed of Joe. Toney was a monster though so by no means a sure thing.

Gonna be cheering on Randy though!!!

Toney struggles with Calzaghe's handspeed and output imo.

Usual problems here with what we define as a 'prime Calzaghe' or a 'prime Toney'.

One thing that is apparant: Calzaghe pulled out of a few fights for injury, but when he came to a ring he was in tip top shape. Toney always showed, but there was no guarantee he hadn't spent the previous week training in McDonalds. we should factor in the possibility that Toney's mentality damages his chances of winning.

the only people who think Toney is a great are desperate RJJ fans who want a good win on his resume.
