Are you sure you've been reading the right thread? Sleazes point that Joe Calzaghe is a coward does not hold up at all and has been countered well enough for me. Noones calling Calzages reign heroic but not heroic is a long way from cowardly. Most people will admit that JC fought too many poor opponents but that there was quite a bit of quality in there as well.
"Quite a bit of quality" is debatable. But the biggest challenges that were around him are not on the record, more over, he didn't even attempt to get those fights. It seems like using the word "coward" is most of the problem everyone has, but I'll ask again... what word would you like me to use for a guy who didn't try and get the biggest challenges around him? Un-brave? Un-couragous? They all mean the same thing, if they're better words for you, I'll accept them instead.
I prefer unambitious or content. It's a crying shame that someone of Joe Calzaghe's ability didn't become a superstar.
:good Hits the nail on the head. The only time I saw him live was about 2003/4. Maccarinelli V Delaney stole the show, Calzaghe's fight was quite boring in truth and there wasn't much of an atmosphere at the Ice Rink that night.
It is that, I used to love the guy boxing. Which is why he annoys me now... I watched Calzaghe-Brewer nervous as a little *******, because Sky were hyping it as the Hatchet this power puncher was the biggest threat to Calzaghe in years... And they were right, unfortunately. He was a very average fighter who was Joe's best opponent for years. That's how bad British boxing was, Calzaghe-Brewer was really big. But it gets to a point where enough is enough, praising Calzaghe for THAT career doesn't set a good example for any young fighters. So f*ck him, he's a un-brave. He may be the best in Britain, but we'll never know now. And that's the most frustrating thing about it. Haye respect. Hatton respect. Arthur respect... give it your best and fight the best. :happy
Yep, the reign certainly wasn't the best and we've debated that so I'll leave it. Neither word you suggested does it for me, boxers (and JC) are brave and couragous both those words have very personal connotations. I'd prefer words (in addition to the ones Dan suggested) like "cautious", "protected", "content", "untested". That don't have that personal insult implied like coward, uncouragous do. Semantics eh?
He didn't go to America, he didn't fight at a weight up when the p4p #1 was sat there for 5 years. He didn't go to Germany when the number 1 or 2 supermiddleweight was over there for Calzaghe's whole career. Hatton showed what you do to get the biggest fight in the sport. Leave Warren. Go to America. Fight at his weight. Call him out on his station, in his home country. You either get the fight, or you don't - but please try. Calzaghe did none of those things, he fought Tocker Pudwill in Newcastle.
I take your point on RJJ. As regards Ottke you could say they were both as bad as each other, I started a thread on it earlier in general - "When HomeBoy Alphabet Pussies Collide".
Why is it that you have to try and hang off Hattons nuts and prove you are the boards Hatton shill in nearly every thread ? Why move up if he is making a decent living at SMW ? As for fighting Ottke or Beyer the germans did not want to make the fight. They like to protect their fighters over there and they could not risk JC raping Ottke or Beyer. Plus to be honest with you they were both pretty **** fighters compared to JC. JC fcked the best the USA had to offer in Lacy. He totally schooled him. He gave Kessler a boxing lesson as well. These were not mugs like Mausa etc that Hatton has been fighting. Besides PBF who fcked Hatton up the ass who else has Hatton faced (prime fighters) ?
Because Calzaghe and Hatton were equals under Warren. Drawing big crowds (particularly Hatton), making good money (Hatton even more so than Calzaghe), and fighting nobody. Hatton took off where Calzaghe never did. Calzaghe didn't take his Mayweather. They are perfectly comparible for what happens if you risk it, and what happens if you don't.
if you change the word coward to his later update of un-brave my point makes sense. No boxers are cowards, trading brain damage for a living is brave enough for me.
