That says more about their lack of quality, if anything else. They were "up and comers" as you say; and remained that way. Most good fighters are not destroyed by one loss.
Calzaghe didn't punch hard because there is no point in trying to punch hard at a guys skull - and as Hopkins was covering up his chin most of the fight the only punches Calzaghe landed were near the temple or shoulders etc. No point in trying to punch hard against that.
A Jeff Lacy loss can destroy any fighter. Plus as Mitchell mentioned "I've never been hit so hard, so often" It isn't a picnic being in with Joe, one of those fighters that can destroy your confidence real quickly.
JC relies on his chin a bit too much to have ever been overly successful at LHW. He's a sucker for a good straight right and there have been many LHW's over the years who have perfected that shot.
Jeff Lacy was a big prospect who failed on the big stage and has failed since to impresse. He still may get a title shot; he's had two wins since the Calzaghe defeat! Sure joe was absolutly clinical that night, but please dont make out Lacy to be something he simply isnt. Joe landed cleanly on Lacy round after round after round. Any boxer with even average power landing like that (I know they all couldnt, but this threads about power), again and again, would have put him away.
As much as I would like to believe other wise, obviously Joe has to have something on his punches or he would be a bloody pulp in the middle of the ring. Kinda the nature of boxing isn't it?
They have to land in order for the power to be felt. Yes, Calzaghe has a tendancy to be caught, but usually only by clever punchers on good angles. Bika didn't really land many flush shots, nor did Lacy, nor did other guys that you assume could be physical enough to emulate the average 175lber. I think Joe could have dominated 175lb as long as RJJ wasn't there.
Against Cotto, yea, has joe ever faced anyone like Cotto? 43 year old Popkins gave Joe a decent mashing by the way.
Short of a little abrasion on his nose caused by the first meaningful punch in the fight, Joe didn't even look like he'd had a fight after Hopkins. Has Joe faced anyone like Cotto? He's faced a guy ranked P4P above Cotto. He faced a guy who was noted as being the most powerful ever at 168. Faced another guy who was said to be the most accurate and powerful fighter he'd ever face too. Not to mention Eubank who made a career out of realigning faces. Funny how Joe Calzaghe still has poster boy looks, huh?
Hopkins anti southpaw & grab + dirty tricks style is one that defies age but Joe has gotten preogressively worse. I just with people would stop giving Hopkins credit for NOT trying to outbox Joe :-(
Joe took a reasonable beating from Hopkins, hardly landed a clean meaningful punch all night, got knocked down on his arse, and scraped a very contentions split points win. Its really sad to see that even in this very short period of time this fact has already been eroded already. When you talk P4P opposition I guess your talking about 43 year old popkins, AGAIN, because Joe has never faced another top 10 p4p fighter in his entire career. As far as the rest of you post goes I fear you afraid to name who you are talking about. *by the way Eubank was as more a boxer then he was a puncher*
Calzaghe hit mitchell with about 20-30 flush clean power shots and he has power. Key word, power is when you hit a guy with ONE or TWO power shots and they go down and dont get back up. Thats a POWER puncher, they have the punch to end the fight. Calzaghe beats guys into submission. Big difference.
