26th January 2008, from an interview Calzaghe gave Setanta Sports: "Joe Calzaghe has told Setanta Sports News that he is not interested in a future bout with Roy Jones Jr., admitting that he would prefer to fight the victor of next months rematch between Kelly Pavlik and Jermain Taylor instead. It was confirmed on Wednesday morning that Calzaghes next outing will be a light-heavyweight clash with ring legend Bernard Hopkins on April 19, a true super-fight which will be screened exclusively LIVE on Setanta Sports. Calzaghe plans one more bout after his long-awaited meeting with The Executioner and speculation had been rife that his farewell fight might be against Jones. However, The Pride of Wales wants nothing to do with Jones, who he believes is no longer a worthy opponent for him. He's past his best. Roy Jones was a great fighter but hes not a great fighter anymore. Hes been knocked out twice in his last five fights. I dont see how thats a motivating fight for me, the undefeated Calzaghe told Setanta Sports News." Jones not a worthy opponent for him? Not a motivating fight? I won't join the Calzaghe-hating bandwagon but I don't like Joe's change of heart.
Calzaghe's always been fairly prone to mood swings, emotions and changes of mind. Part of the package. The below article seems to me to shine something of a light into Calzaghe's psyche: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/columnists/paul_kimmage/article3602904.ece
Joe Calzaghe is a legend but as a Calzaghe fan I'm not sure if he should fight Pavlik. If Joe was two or three years younger he would destroy Pavlik like hedestroyed Lacy but he is coming towards the end.
