I love Joe as a fighter, great to watch, fights with heart, great offensively, but despite winning, and thats exactly what he did againt Hopkins his defen ce was lacking, is it fair to say Joe's defence is basically a good offence, and quick feet, he doesn't block and doesn't have great head movement. Just a thought.
calzaghe has a much better defense than he gets credit for. he takes away fighters best weapons. lacy was not able to land a punch dur to great head and foot movement calzaghe`s feet and head movement took away kesslers jab. hopkins managed to land 11 jabs in 12 rounds v calzaghe and from the 4th round onwards calzaghe read 95% of the right hands and slipped or parried them. its because he looks open , but its deceptive ,opponents always find it hard to land clean once he gets there timing. its much better now than it was in his early career. calzaghe has the best head movement of any offensive boxer 160 to 330lb today. because calzaghe lets his hands go so often , it also does not give oipponents time to look for there own offense which naturally results in less punches for calzaghe to take.
Fair point, but you could argue that he is so great offencively that it stop other fighters being able to land effectively. He looked slowish against Hopkin and as a result Hopkins was able to land cos there wasn't the usual volume coming from Joe. I do love Joe by the way.
I would not say it is lacking he relies more on his head movement to avoid punches due to his unorthodox style.
He defence doesn't compare to his offence. IMO he shouldn't have been hit so easy against Hopkins considering he's not that offensively gifted.
His style and offense is based on making his opponent defensive. His akward punching technique and constant output is the tell tale sign. But he gets hit a whole lot by clean punches. He just has a good chin and will and recovery. Bhop didnt land the jab b/c he didnt throw the jab b/c he knew it was a useless punch(his jab) against a southpaw. Calzaghe did not roll that many right hands when bhop threw it straight it connected with fair ease. He was not able to catch joe off guard with it. Joe was looking for that one punch and he still got hit with it but it did not catch him off guard. The idea behind a counter punch is not the power behind it but the opponent not seeing it. Calzaghe realized that hopkins left hook was non existent and his right hand was his only big punch and still got hit with it more clean then ANY calzaghe punch that landed clean.
Im not even thinking of you. I read the subject and posted on that. I did not read what you or any other Calzaghe fan club member posts. I just posted on the subject.
