He had recurring hand injuries, wasn't motivated and was past prime.
Calzaghe was a great fighter, he shouldn't have been protected for so long I'll grant you that, but he certainly wasn't about to be exposed.

at the end of the day calzaghe quit cos carl the cobra froch called him out numerous times and calzaghe allways had some excuse.....

joe knew that if he got in the ring with the cobra he would have got battered and lost his 0.

    quite simple really.

joe got put down in the 1st round against a well past his prime jones jr and hopkins......

the cobra would have smashed joe's the slapper's napper right in, inside 3 rounds.

i thought he retired too soon, i wouldnt say his skills were fading but im sure his glass hands have been a worsening issue for years.

yeah cos froch hits harder than a old frail hopkins and a semi retired jones.

wouldnt get back up of froch's power.

Calzaghe beat everyone he fought and retired as undefeated champ :smoke.
At 37 it was probably a good time to retire at the top of the tree, after defending his crown time and time again.

Imperial has trouble excepting Calzaghe beat everyone and look for excuses as alot of American fans do also.

On the subject of Jones, I read an interesting article where when Jones failed his drug test, his levels were 6 times above what was normal, and Jones claimed he used Ripped fuel, but the article said Ripped fuel didnt have that big effect, and that it wouldnt have been Ripped fuel.
Stevie Johnson years ago beat Billy Schwer and failed his drug test, he claimed he had a bit of a cold and bought a cold mixture product in England, which contained what he claimed, the only thing was that product wasnt available in England, so he was found to be not telling the truth. This sounds similar to Jones

Imperial, except it Jones and Hopkins were beaten by the better man

i heard a similar story about maradona when he got banned in usa 94, he said he took ripped fuel all the time in argentina, but when he had to buy some in the usa it was called something different than ripped fuel, was ripped something i cant remember exactley ripped max or something, but basically the one in argentina didnt have a certain something in that the product did in the usa and he was tested and banned.

Calzaghe had innumerable hand problems through out his career, fought Lacy whilst injured, Jones fight put back as well because of a hand issue, broke his hand against Reid and Ashira and sometimes only fought once a year, it catches us all in the end.

    :think

Jones is STILL a fairly active fighter. If you mean because he's old then fair enough but semi-retired to me means a fighter like DLH in his later days but Jones fights regularly
