Calzaghe's retired. He had a decent career, nothing I'd brag about, but he did his thing. I gave it some thought, and I'm glad he's gone. He can sit on the sidelines and start that promotion company and be successful. More power to him. I never liked his no rematches rule, and the way he picked his fights made me furious (and if that was his angle it ****ing worked). Boxing doesn't need a fighter like this. Guys like him make boxing look like some fighters are pussies.

It's a shame how he got so much spotlight for not fighting. If he would have taken on the fights that came his way, I guarantee I'd have a lot more respect for the guy. The whole deal with not taking on a younger Roy Jones, Glen Johnson, or any of the other prospective matches just puts him on level with Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd Mayweather Jr, and a prime Roy Jones. He was a great fighter, with exceptional talent, and he picked his way to the top. Some people can look at that, and perhaps admire it. I just can't find it in my heart to give the guy all that most people seem to think he deserves.

All in all he was a great fighter that left a lot of question marks. Maybe he can sleep at night knowing the bank he made, but I hope he lives with what he didn't do in the ring.

I'll predict this now, I'm gonna get slammed by fanboys and nuthuggers. So go ahead. Fanboys, show your colors.

Your post is objective, but has one flaw. He tried like hell to fight roy 5 years ago, but roy didn't consider him worthy, and roy even said it later
    right before they fought.

    Good post.

To add to what christo said he tried to get Hopkins years ago too. Google it and you'll see.

your saying that he tried to call out both jones and hopkins years ago but think about it from there perspective ,wbo champion who had never fought anybody of note demanding they come to england and fight and demanding 50% of the purse which wouldnt of been that great ,people on here have short term memories before the lacy fight calzaghe got slammed everywhere in us boxing circles for being a 1 dimensional slapper hes was underated then but now after a decent run of fights hes a boxing god,I lie in the middle of this argument I like joe he has got great skills which got better towards the end of his career but his overall resume is poor also I am english Im not a nuthugger or a hater im a realist but all in all Im glad hes gone cause people overrate him something awful on this site people saying he would of beaten anybody head to head better than ray robinson and bull**** like that which frankly is an insult to boxing,if he fought jones hopkins or toney in there prime they would of murdered him especially considering joe improved with age he was very raw back in the day and very vunerable to counter punchers look at the salem fight he was awful, but all in all he was a very good fighter who should of made more of his career but I wish him all the best in retirement

Calzaghe's legacy = a gigantic question mark ???????????? past his prime eubank, never was Lacy, past his prime B-Hop (who many thought he lost to), wayyyyyy past his prime Roy (who basically everyone on earth agrees would have whupped Calzaghe in his prime). The only fight he can really take credit for is Kessler but then again who has Kessler ever beaten? No one....Kessler could turn out to be a never was for all we know and Kessler has fought nothing but sub par competiton before and after Calzaghe so basically he lost against his only good competition and gets unfairly hyped, the guy might not actually be that good for all we know, we'll see when he fights someone with a pulse if that ever happens. I'll give it up to Calzaghe though his skill set is amazing and he's a very good fighter but we'll never know how he feared against a top level fighter in his prime so the sad thing is his legacy will always be in question and he'll have a hard time cracking a top 100 ATG list with the lack of that credential.

From an interview with Frank Warren, google it if you wish.

"When he changed his mind a few years ago, I made Roy Jones jnr a written $5m offer to fight Joe. When he ran scared I offered another legend Bernard Hopkins $3.5m.

Hopkins verbally agreed but before I could make any arrangements he demanded double the money. That didn't make business sense and we couldn't do it. Joe was too risky for them because he is too good a good boxer. I also offered Markus Beyer and Mikkel Kessler £1.5m each to fight Joe and they ran a mile, too. What more could I do?"

Just wanted to set you straight that Hopkins had already accepeted then changed his mind.
I'm no nutthugger btw, rate Calzaghe 80th ATG, no more no less.

Cal was/is a carefully guided "very good fighter" who cherry picked styles and deteriorated fighters who's style suited him, and avoided others that didn't suit him. Biggest wins were 1. old B-Hops - Jermain Taylor "beat" him twice...does that make J.T. great too? lol. 2. old and very shot RJJ - Tarver and G. Johnson knocked him the %$#@ out before Cal went the full 12 with him - real big win eh? 3. Kessler - this guy still has a $%#@ load to prove and has no real signature wins AT ALL. I for one won't this over hyped fighter.

Read what I said I never said he didnt offer them the fight but why would they take the fight against an unknown fighter with no notable wins in the uk when they could get better money fighting other people calzaghe was irrelevant in world boxing standards till he beat lacy

Well, I have a short time to write this, but I admit I'm on shaky ground talking about who he didn't fight, and why he didn't get the chance with men like B-Hop and Roy. I'm gonna do some research, and come back swinging, really ****ing hard, with intent to destroy. (And to cement my position on Calzaghe)

Now, don't take this too hard. I still think he was a great fighter, but he left a lot of question marks. Maybe it was protecting that '0' at the end that really pissed me off. Or how he acted like he was too good to take certain fights. I think a real fighter would have admitted some of the flaws he openly portrayed, or at least would act humble instead of acting invincible (which I know for a fact he isn't). Looking like an ass after a close win, really isn't a way to win over the fans. Doesn't it bother him that one judge scored against him in the B-Hop fight? I think a real fighter wouldn't stand for aberrations like that. I do think he's a total ***** for not getting his act together and taking on Bernard Hopkins a second time. If Hopkins wouldn't have beaten Pavlik, I wouldn't be riding this horse. But seriously folks, the public should be clamoring for this fight!

But it puts paid the idea that Joe was over protected and ducked major fights, he can't be blamed for Bhop and RJJ not wanting to fight him.

Good Riddance. He squeaks by Hopkins in a fight, I actually scored for Calzaghe, but many scored for Hopkins. Then what does he do to cement his legacy, rematch Hopkins? Fight Dawson? Fight Pavlik? No he goes and fights the corpse that is Roy Jones. He actually says "I beat Hopkins in Vegas and I'll beat Jones in NY....There is nothing for me to prove...." It was despicable the way he was showboating while beating up a guy who was knowingly shot and used up over 5 years ago. Then he hides behind "Well the Americans are biased and will never give me credit...." bull**** :patsch
