Calzaghe's gone and this is how I see it...

Good Riddance. He squeaks by Hopkins in a fight, I actually scored for Calzaghe, but many scored for Hopkins. Then what does he do to cement his legacy, rematch Hopkins? Fight Dawson? Fight Pavlik? No he goes and fights the corpse that is Roy Jones. He actually says "I beat Hopkins in Vegas and I'll beat Jones in NY....There is nothing for me to prove...." It was despicable the way he was showboating while beating up a guy who was knowingly shot and used up over 5 years ago. o not this type of 'fan'.....everyone i know wanted to see roy jones vs calzaghe- he was 'knowingly shot' loool except people were split on who was going to win and many picked roy......then hes not allowed to showboat!!!!!!!!!!! even tho he was knocked down and hurt in the first round!then the fight dawson thing-wooow if he wins that what would you say...' he was green, hed already been beaten by johnson and who has he beaten!...hopkins again?????no thanks zzzzz...and pavlik? u kiddin me. Now im just tryna point out the other side of the story. I wasnt being critical of the other fighters as ima fan

Just because people thought Jones wouldd win, doesn't mean he WASN'T shot atsch It changes nothing.

Calzaghe's retired. He had a decent career, nothing I'd brag about, but he did his thing. I gave it some thought, and I'm glad he's gone. He can sit on the sidelines and start that promotion company and be successful. More power to him. I never liked his no rematches rule, and the way he picked his fights made me furious (and if that was his angle it ****ing worked). Boxing doesn't need a fighter like this. Guys like him make boxing look like some fighters are pussies.

It's a shame how he got so much spotlight for not fighting. If he would have taken on the fights that came his way, I guarantee I'd have a lot more respect for the guy. The whole deal with not taking on a younger Roy Jones, Glen Johnson, or any of the other prospective matches just puts him on level with Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd Mayweather Jr, and a prime Roy Jones. He was a great fighter, with exceptional talent, and he picked his way to the top. Some people can look at that, and perhaps admire it. I just can't find it in my heart to give the guy all that most people seem to think he deserves.

All in all he was a great fighter that left a lot of question marks. Maybe he can sleep at night knowing the bank he made, but I hope he lives with what he didn't do in the ring.

I'll predict this now, I'm gonna get slammed by fanboys and nuthuggers. So go ahead. Fanboys, show your colors.

I agree with your sentiment in general, but Calzaghe did not have a no rematches rule, he re-matched Mario Veit, he only came up with the no rematches rule because he didn't want to fight Hopkins again. Also, it doesn't matter who Calzaghe had fought in his career, he never had the skills or ability of a Leonard, Mayweather or Jones.

He's possibly the biggest question mark in boxing right now. In hindsight we see a fighter who had an amazing title defense run, but the cons are it's a lesser known belt and his opposition is less then impressive. A fighter with exceptional talent, yet (to me) he only showed excellent skill against Lacy and Kessler. Two fighters that are now (in hindsight) not as good as they were hyped up to be. I think Kessler is a great talent, but he's a got a little more time to ripen. As for Lacy...we know the end to that story. Kinda like a next generation David Reid.
