Just watching Joe Calzaghe train in the intro on the Jeff Lacy DVD.

Never truly appreciated how fast Calzaghe actually is.

Barry McGuigan is watching Joe train and hit the pads and he comments "Mesmerising speed, mesmerising."

Its insane how fast his handspeed is.

Would you say anyone in history has faster hand speed ? Im not talking over-all speed and agility because I think Roy Jones probably has that, im talking pure handspeed.

I'd probably place Calzaghe first in a tie with Meldrick Taylor.

Close are probably Camacho, Jones, Judah etc...

    Thoughts ?

It's really amazing to see how fast Calzaghe is now. But then I put in some of his fights from a few years back...:yikes

Jones had faster reflexes and much better timing, but not better overall handspeed. A prime Calzaghe's handspeed was absolutely frightening, such as during the Byron Mitchell fight.

Why do you think nobody was really wanting to fight him during that time.:yep

If you think guys like Hopkins wouldn't have watched the Mitchell fight and thought 'holy ****, that guy's a nightmare to fight' then you people are crazy.:yep

Exactly - Calzaghe didn't have much to fear. Why would he be the one ducking people? I never bought into that...

He was as good as anybody including Hopkins. And if they fought at 168, I think he would have won a close, but clear decision.

The special thing about Calzaghe speed is it is effective speed.

That is unlike Oscar he actually has timing and accuracy in his lightening fast punches. Something truly unique which seperates him from other fast fighters.

watching him throw those rapid awkward punches is really a thing of beuty to watch. using it to beutifully brutalize and befuddle lacy was one of the most badass things i've seen in a ring.
