if kessler gets beat or ko'd calzaghes resume doesnt look as great. calzaghe also failed to give hopkins a rematch a fight which many said hopkins beat him..
Eh. Maybe it seems like that to you but the only legacy Calzaghe really has is being a consistent, long running, dominant champion. And that's a good legacy. Not the greatest but it's undeniably good.
yes but ricky hatton would have the same status if he didnt face floyd mayweather or manny pacquaio...
Kessler was a massive win for Joe at the time and even now when we look back. However the better he does the better Calzaghe looks.
Hopkins is STILL rated top 5 p4p and was 3 or 4 at the time. Close fight it may have been but he still beat a guy that will likely be ranked higher than Kessler ever will. Even if Kessler never wins another fight he's still a two time world champ and a guy that has unified two belts. And let's not forget the ten years joe held a belt and the 8 or so other world champions he beat. Frankly whatever Kessler does from now on wont do much either way to Joe's legacy.
I see what you're saying but it doesn't really take into account Kessler's improvements e.g. Morales beat Pac and Pac is doing great things but the current Pac is a very, very different fighter than the one Morales beat. Not that I'm saying Kessler has improved, or will improve. I don't know cause I don't really follow his career, but just saying, a fighter can improve.
I agree. But I don't believe it will really hurt Joe's legacy, unless Kessler is exposed as just another protected European fighter. I mean, if he loses several fights, gets knocked out, or gets cut in the first elimination round, that will hurt Joe. But I don't expect that to happen. If, on the other hand, Kessler wins the tournament, he will arguably be pretty close to all time great status, depending of course on how he wins it.
