Calzaghe did what he did because he's just the kind of person to take the safer path through life. He probably wouldn't change anything. He's not that much of a boxing fan, he just happened to be pretty good at it. Even for fans, he's always been a tad frustrating by pulling out of fights and not pushing for the bigger fights earlier. But it is what it is and I often wonder 'how far could he have gone' ? We'll never fully know.
Better performances in the sence of Lacy was an exhibition of ownage and Kessler was great fight and and great performance. Quite how good the Hopkins performance was is hidden by the scrappy nature of the fight. Hopkins doesnt let anyone put on their best show and their styles did not gel into a pretty fight. But I see what you mean that a scrappy win vs Hopkins is probably his best win and quite possibly best performance (excepting the 1st)... but it didn't LOOK anywhere near his best performance. Looks however, especially where Hopkins is concerned, can be deceiving.

Who cares??? Why the **** talk about Calzaghe when he is not in the fight? ____________________ Wake up and get ready for Ward - Kessler!!!!
If Kessler loses clearly this is proof that talent wise Joe Calzaghe rates lower than Butterbean. :hey
The best had the other belt? What guys like Woodhall? Reid? Mitchell? Lacy? Brewer? See a pattern developing there? The only fighter during Joe's WBO reign that even has a remote claim to being the best in the division was Ottke. But the truth is Ottke had robbery wins vs guys that Calzaghe then beat, narrowly in Reids case, but otherwise convincingly. As for the WBO belt not being recognised I think you need to look at the division history in a bit more detail. Until Joe vacted the belt it was far and away the hardest SMW belt to win as shown by the number of champions to hold it, the undoubted quality of those champions and the vast roll call of past present and future champs to try and win it and fail. Champions make belts not the other way round. A belt only held by the likes of Hearns, Eubank, Collins and Calzaghe is a belt of stature... whatever letters are on it.
Of course Kessler's career will have a baring on Calzaghe's legacy, for the simple reason that the only opponent to lose to Calzaghe and then go on to achieve something significant is Hopkins, who went on to beat Pavlik.
I don't think it matters. He beat a good fighter. If Ward knocks out Kessler, then that a little different. But still Calzaghe won that fight when it mattered.
Stupid thread which i have no dout was started outta bitterness towards Calzaghe as he is not a U.S Fighter and was the ruler of his weight class for a decade and when towards the end of his carear people ? his lecacy he fought and beat both Jones Jnr (Slightly faded),Hopkins (still World class) and he beat Hopkins out right no it wasent pretty but then tell me a fighter who has looked good against Hopkins , This kessler fight tonight weather he win, lose,or draw dosent affect Calzaghe's Lecacy at all
