I doubt it was because they wouldnt dare....(Ottke yes, Beyer I dont know). He wasnt the draw he later became. He didnt leave Wales for all those years. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he fought who he could. Im not disrepecting him or his talent, he very well may have given RJJ a fight back in the day. But his resume is his resume , regardless if it was their fault or his. I have to cut out, but I'll check back later. Good discussion, although i recently swore I wouldnt get Calzaghified anymore.
Ottke flat out would not dare to face Calzaghe because he knew Calzaghe was going in there with the intent to knock him out. Unlike other fighters, Calzaghe could do this without fear, his jaw was that good. Beyer didn't want a piece of Calzaghe either, what you'll see if you study is that any fighter who had a close/disputed decision against Beyer or Ottke in their reign was a fighter Joe signed to fight almost immediately after and dominated them. Why didn't Joe leave Wales? Because lets face it, he wasn't a commodity, he was fighting on undercards mostly because no one was giving him a chance to step up. He tried to get Hopkins in 2001 in America, Hopkins agreed to terms and then backed out. That fight would have at least given Joe some name recognition. Once Joe got name recognition at the expense of Lacy, he used it to get high level fights and went to America too. I think had Joe managed to get Ottke early and put him away, he'd have had the recognition as a unified champ to have gone after the bigger American names and I think with the exception of Jones Jr, he'd have beaten anyone in 160,168 or 175 from 1998-2008 - that he didn't get the opportunity is a shame, but I feel wins over a very game Kessler, Lacy who was a 4-1 favorite (that paid my house deposit) and the win against Hopkins showed us his talent when combined wtih a very solid, ten year resume mean his legacy is secure. He'll go down as one of Britains best ever and deserves a place in my view in the Top 50.
I have always believed that Joe could have fought Pavlik, but you may be right and the Hopkins-Pavlik fight may very well have already been signed! If that is so I am happy to accept that, but I do have some doubts at present regarding this. As I have already stated I am a fan of Joe's, despite what some fools who do not know me think, but I am also frustrated with him because who knows how high a ranking ATG he could have been but for injuries and bad fight choices. His legacy IS secure but it could have been so much more!!
I agree, but joe could so easily been much higher up the ATG rankings, but for injuries which lead to long periods of inactivity and frankly some poor opponent selection!! And that should frustrate any true fan of Calzaghe's.
Kessler being beaten up and stopped by the inexperienced Ward was a severe body-blow to Calzaghe's legacy. A really clear and bad one that I doubt even his most ardent fan could deny.
He was given WAY too much credit for the Jones win. Jones was shot to **** last year just as he is now.
It depends how you view it. Beating a fighter the first time, after he's had a number of good results just prior to being beat means more than beating a fighter the second time, when said fighter was inactive. But, I'm taking the positive from that fight, that Ward announced himself as a serious prospect and someone with a toolset that may mean we've found our "next generation" with Hopkins, Jones Jr and co fading into the sunset in their own careers. Had Kessler gone on and completely dominated for the rest of his career, of course he's a better win for Calzaghe, but I don't think he becomes a lesser win solely due to losing to Ward, the situation and circumstance was different.
And what if Ward gets knocked cold by Abraham? You're entitled to your opinion mate, but no matter how you look at it Kessler being beaten up and stopped by Ward most definitely did and will harm Calzaghe's all-time standing. JMHO.
Not saying he was better or worst than a prime Jones, whos career does have some debate, due to performance enhancing drugs. I said do you think that version of Hopkins would have beaten Calzaghe. You may think he would, I dont, but we'll never know,
The topic was is Calzaghes legacy fading. The countdown is meant to make a fight intriguing to make it sell. It wouldnt sell if it said Pavlik is a one dimensional easy to hit, big puncher 2 weight divisions down. But if Calzaghe had of fought Pavlik who was lighter, and too slow, this thread would now be slating Calzaghe for beating a lighter fighter. I seem to recall alot of people predicting Jones to beat Calzaghe at the time the fight was signed as well.
Why is it so hard to believe that someone on this forum has such an I.Q? I'm sure many possess such an I.Q and higher!! Are you suggesting that every member of ESB is dumb? And not capable of possessing a good brain? Or as a "Newbie" is it your considered opinion that all boxing fans are educationally sub normal? By the way, how the **** do you know at what level my I.Q is? Because yours isn't? If I didn't know better i'd suggest you were the idiot who insulted me and called me a dim-witted which is what prompted me to mention my I.Q level in the first place. If i'm overreacting that is because I do not like to be insulted by ****ing strangers and there's none stranger than the knob who slagged me!! I tell you what, mouth, I can prove what i've wrote and i'll say this: Anyone (and this especially concerns that wanker who kicked me off in the first place) wants to bet a life-time ban on this i'm up for it!! So either put up or shut the **** up!!!! I come on here to voice my opinion, respectfully and without wanting to insult anyone, no matter how wrong I may think they are and whenever I have been corrected I have graciously accepted this, but no ****er is gonna insult me and not get it back!! No ****er on here puts up with personal insults from people they don't know, simply because of a difference of opinion and i'm not going to either!! jdyumyum? Now THAT's David Brent (Who was another un-funny wanker!!!).
