I know. Weights have their niche and it isn't endurance training IMO. That's what I meant. I think, not sure :think I'm both flattered and surprised, thanks
If you're gonna do weights, at least do them after roadwork and gym work (as an addition, not a replacement). Ricky Hatton is a good example for this. He only weight-trains for 20-minutes a day/4 times a week AFTER his boxing workout. I think they said he does shoulders/traps one day, back/lats another, legs/lower body another, and finishes off with a chest workout on the last day of the week. I hope mayweather beats him though :thumbsup !
ricky hatton trains like a bodybuilder, if you are weight training it should be done once a week, and it is not a replacement, which something alot of people have a hard time understanding.
He does but Ricky trains explosively. This is what most fundamentally on this thread dont seem to understand. You can be a heavyweight and be equally as fast as a lightweight IF you train the muscle correctly.IE you train for explosiveness rather than just sheer power and lifting weight purely for strength and power. Combining explosive muscle (IE high density fast twitch fibres) produces a frightening combination. Some guys are blessed with this naturally but they are a very rare exception.Tyson being a very good example. As the quality of the muscle increases aswell as the density, striation, muscle conditioning including muscle memory increase proportionally which is vital for ANY sport.Well trained "functional muscle" is far more invaluable in any sport as opposed to simple muscle mass.
Doing more reps doesnt increase muscle quality by a great deal.If you looking for better muscle you have to build the quality of the muscle by working the thickness of the muscle properly ideally with compound excercises as this works the entire length of the muscle. Most assume that low weights high rep output burns more calories, this it does but the effects would take much much longer and its not an effective way of building good quality muscle.
Yup thats exactly the way i train.I lift weights before my session (which is crazy i know but i like to make double the work) for about 40 minutes and then train for about an hour 30.At the end of that session im literally ****ed.But the gains i make turn me into the fast twitch cardio machine that i am today!:yep:deal Plus i get a solid sports massage once a week. Now that ****ing hurts!!
I posted the same thing earlier relentless (#237 on this thread). I was just saying if you absolutely WANT TO/HAVE TO to follow a weight-lifting plan for more than one day - you're better off doing something like that and it needs to be done AFTER boxing and roadwork. You can't cut your training down to focus on the weights is what I was getting at.
Defintly not.If you looking at gaining weight and moving up a weight then yeah obviously lift and eat your way to the higher weight. But there is no subsitute at all for good CV.:thumbsup
For people who want to burn calories they're better off sticking to aerobic exercises (below cardio, it's more effiecient). Althought an increase in muscle mass will raise a person's metabolism. Weight lifting should be an anerobic activity to build stronger muscles which is why I'm lost when people try to lift for an aerobic workout doing hundreds of reps. I'm not sure if I was misunderstood in my earlier posts. I was just trying to state what people generally believe are often unsupported.
If you want to know how Calzaghe trains read his book "No Ordinary Joe". It is a great read. He writes extensively about his training. Old school all the way. He even uses the term. Running, traditional boxing training, calisthenics and no weights.
I don't think there's any question that an intelliegently designed weight training regimen can be beneficial to a boxer but I think one reason that "old school" training may be preferable has more to do with time than anything else. Calisthenics be done anywhere and don't require alot of room to perform. Pushups, situps, leglifts, squats etc can be performed right inside the ring along with medicine ball work at the end of a boxing workout. No need for a bench with barbells or a bowflex machine and changing plates for various sets and reps. That requires time and space. For most trainers old fashioned calisthenics probably give thier fighters the most "bang for thier buck" if you know what I mean. Kind of what the military believes also. You only have so much time to get a fighter or soldier into "combat" or "fighting" shape. No time for sets, reps or "periodization" training. Whip 'em into shape fast and teach him the skills necessary to be a successful fighter or soldier. That's not to say that weights can't be incorporated into a boxing workout. Any fighter can grab a pair of dumbells off of a rack and do a series of exercises to build some extra strength and endurance that only takes a few minutes to do. The problems occur when a fighter focuses too much on getting bigger and hoisting too much weight at the expense of speed and conditioning which is why many trainers tend to shy away from weights. Calisthenics can do the job just as well. All the ATG's trained that way for the most part and look what they accomplished. Make any sense to boxing fans out there?
if ur going to use weights try and do full body excercises with them we do a few in are gym its very effective
Thanks Hardhands. In prepartion to whip Hopkins, Joe is using the same methods he always uses. As he said in a recent interview, "all I need to get ready for a fight is a mountain to run up and lots of sparring partners" Joe's old school approach will have him in better shape than all Hopkins' specialized trainers and training and combined with his tremendous skills, he will retire Bernard. See the post I made in the Marvin Hagler thread on this forum for the similarity in the Calzaghe training approach to the Hagler approach.
hmm didn't enzo calzaghe say that he doesn't like much sparring and that the only sparring partners he has for joe are maccarinelli, reese and one other guy? and what do you think of enzo calzaghe not allowing jump ropes in his gym?
