I know Calzaghe isn't a power puncher, but how much do you think he's punches hurt? I'm always amazed how often Calzaghe get's his opponents to stay in a defensive shell well he fires off ten punches with his hands down, very few counters are thrown by his opponents, and when they are thrown there often weak and ineffective. Do people think that this is because those punches hurt, or is it just the speed and volume that they are coming at that render the opponent helpless. I tend to think its a combination of both. What do other people think?
cal usually throws a couple of hard punches amongst those flurry's. best to duck them all just incase. lol.
I think the speed he uses with the lighter punches just keeps the opponent at bay while he ends the flurry with a harder shot
When he first won the world title he was punching a lot harder, you could see he isnt putting the same venom in as he used to. He is honest about the fact he has taken power out of his shots, due to the bad injuries he was suffering to his hands. Probably a good decision for him because some of his earlier defences were dull to watch coz he was boxing with only one hand, its also cost him some big fights aswel i.e Glen Johnson. I think he picks and chooses when he puts power in, he def stunned RJJ on occassion and hurt both Kess and Lacy so can dig when he chooses. Never really been a 1 punch KO artist though.
From his (T)KO's it's usually the sheer volume of punches thrown that momentarily buzz his opponents. He's not really the type to spark a guy clean out. Because he continually keeps this frenetic tempo, he can keep his opponents off-balance with his jab. It can be very mentally exhausting to keep that kind of pace for 12rds or so, and for all his inaccuracy, he still connects at least some of the time. Like I said though, more accumulative stun than kill. An impressive TKO of his was the 1st rd assault over Mario Veit. Punch that landed perfectly on the chin which put Veit down. Veit wasn't badly hurt but it looked excellent. Again though, it came rather at random from one of his flurries rather than a perfectly timed (intentional) shot. Think TKO not KO (ala Mitchell and Manfredo).
I don't think he has any power. I think its all accumulation. If you look back, at all the numbers of punches he has landed on guys, he never knocks them out. Any decent power puncher would KO someone with half that many landed shots. If I let my 6 year old son hit me 200 times in the face with padded gloves, my face will be busted and swollen too. The look on Lacy or anyone else is not a testament to his power because he does not have power. He has gotten the job done with thousands of slappy pat punches. But whatever you call them, it has worked for him so far.
enough to keep other fighters honest. not a big hitter but just enough to let you know better than to get stupid and get caught with something you dont see.
i think he used to punched harder when he first started his world title reign. However his punches must be hard enough to force other fighters into a defensive shell
at the end of the day, the boxers he faced have not let Joe hit them with 200 punches. u need to give props because 1. he lands the shots and 2. the shots hurt
he has very deceptive power in his right hand...all of his opponents make the mistake of watching out for his straight left, but the punch that always hurts his opponents is the right hook...either to the side of the head or the body. Anyone who thinks he has no power, look at his record and the KO ratio...it is better than Glen Johnson's. Also, he hurts all of his opponents at least one time in every fight.
Most fighters say that they are surprised by his power. He caught Jones with some real nice straight lefts that had pop
