Seemed to have got worse as his career went on. He went from a power puncher to an accumulative type puncher. Was this because of hand injuries?
Joe never had world class power....never.....the hand injuries were a factor but not as huge as some of the calzaghe worshipers claim....
He had decent power as a young fighter, he developed his style around his fragile hands though as he got older.
Watching his fights as he youngster he certainly had decent power...22 fights, 21 stoppages doean't occur whoever you fight unless you have decent power. I'm not really sure on World Class...at that stage of his career it looked as though it could be but it was never looking like being in the same league as a puncher like Naz, but then his power was freakish. I don't think it is a coincidence that he had lots of hand injuries and the stoppages became less frequent. Yes opposition got tougher but still... A guy like Manfredo in his early career he'd have really hurt and blasted out instead of that windmill stuff that in honesty didn't really hurt Manfredo.
Yep... He's never knocked anyone out clean. Also, he never really put anyone on ***** street. He stopped people through sheer exhaustion or getting them overwhelmed for the most part.
Calzaghe never could have had the kind of power Hamed had. Even if he had a clean bill of health Hamed was on a different level.
He certainly did have a bit of power in his youth, combine that bit of power with the speed he had and that turned it into good power. Of course it was the hand injuries that evaporated that bit of power he once had.....
That's exactly what I have said. But earlier in his career he definitely hit harder...put a lot more into his punches and punched a lot more conventionally too...like in this fight for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35KqYUKUazg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiK9deXVz80 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL0uqguzMKs It's quite interesting hesring the old commentary on fighters who are now established at the top!
Calzaghe wasn't a huge puncher. His power came from good timing. As you can imagine, the tougher the opposition the less KO's you get. Calzaghe was at a 90% clip going into the Eubank fight I believe. Fights ended in more of an accumulation of punches than heavy brutal KO's like Michalchzewski had for example.
His power has always been enough, even at the end when he was regarded as featherfisted. If you watch he'd mix in flurries with the occasional hard shot. There is a distinct difference between a true featherfist like Malignaggi and 'Slapper' Joe, which is why not one opponent of Calzaghe's has ever forced him to take a backward step. Nobody could 'walk though' his power as people claim, there was a volume of hard enough shots that they didn't want to get hit.
I think he was a fair hitter. He wouldn't have floored Eubank otherwise. He was certainly more concusive then he should have been. I recall him troubling reid a little early.
