well seeing as it seems to be calzaghe season here on eastside, I thought rather than fight it anymore, I'd post how it all began, here is the "slapmeisters" first pro fight

    Not the best ref job...

should have give him one more shot, but it was only really going one way, a lot of british refs when judging a prospect vs a journeyman, rather than wait to see if a guy is too hurt to continue, they wait until he starts getting outclassed before stopping it

btw, that three slap combo in the middle of the round looked pretty hard to me.

    Two things:

1.For the first 20 seconds I couldn't tell which one was Calzaghe. He looked really different back then, but maybe it's just the video quality.

2.Was he seriously ****ing showboating in the first round of his first pro fight?

he was showboating since his amateur days, also, that was a pretty great ali shuffle he pulled after the second knockdown

also, they have similar hairstyles and attires, so they do look alike, the silver trim is what seperates them

I wouldn't be too impressed. I certainly wouldn't think that he would become an elite fighter. Looks average until he lands those big shots near the end, where he displays good speed and pop. Even then, though, I would just think that he's an otherwise average looking fighter. A bit sloppy at some points. I'd assume that he has potential, but not to an outstanding degree. I think Naseem Hamed looks more like a world class talent in his debut, despite the fact that it went on longer. Just goes to show how difficult these things can be to assess.

LOL Calzaghe ate the first 2 straight right hands of the fight.

In all seriousness, Calzaghe ought to have been disqualified at 2:12, there were 2 or 3 punches landed when Hanlon was clearly on one knee, one of which was a rabbit punch to the back of the head.

Worse than Jones-Griffin 1, only Hanlon managed to stay up.

I went to this event. Mostly for the main event and because Ross Hale was on the undercard.

I didnt find out until about 10 years later that i had witnessed Calzaghes debut lol. I try to pay more attention these days.
