Ya know, when I first came in ESB back in 05-06, I was still gaining knowledge about boxing. I really didn't know anything about Calzaghe minus what boxrec provided.
I swear, at that time, Calzaghe didn't have the greatest reputation here. I was a little surprised because he was the WBO super mid champ for a while, undefeated, and people here seemed pretty skeptical about him. I was hearing something about injuries, something about ducking fighters, I really didn't learn too much.

Once he schooled Lacy, it was like a party exploded and everyone loved him. It's been that way ever since, a growing party of Calzaghe fanatics.

Can someone explain what the hell happened?? Did these fans just come out of hiding, or did I just have weird timing? :conf

He basicly beat 42 bums then beat a couple of decent guys in Lacy and MK, then fought two shot legends. Now he thinks that makes him an ATG....:rofl

His resume was extremely average up until that point and really still isnt sensational, though he deserves p4p status now.

It started ok but when he was established between about 01 to 04 I think, he fought absolute trash. Certainly not totally his fault but the fact remains he hardly fought a worthy opponant in that time.
He looked good but the reasoning was it wasnt hard to look good against those guys.

Not many people gave him a chance against Lacy simply because we hadnt seen him in with a truly up and coming fighter like Lacy.

He fought in obscurity to the North American fan. Since he didn't have the exposure, most had never seen him or his talent. So, naturally people were skeptical of both his talent and his resume. Now that he is getting wider exposure, he's getting wider acceptance.

    It makes sense.

    NO.

if so that mean Kessler, lacy, hopkins,RJJ,reid,Eubank, mitchell,BIka, are all bums.

and they are harley that. kessler will go on to rule the roost. LAcy was a destroyer untill JOE whooped him. he beat ho and RJJ and EUBANK. and RIED is far from a bum at the time JOE beat him. and bika is pretty solid.

Calzaghe was thought of as being extremely ****ing good and a force of nature in the ring. Calzaghe/Lacy was at worst a 50-50 fight in the minds of credible observers. In some ways, I think a handful of long time fans have come to the conclusion that Joe was not as good in certain ways, or overall, as they once perhaps believed. He was extremely vulnerable, and careless, at different points against Kessler, Hopkins, and Jones. Kessler had the will, and not the skills, and Hopkins and Jones had the skills and not the will. Early on Calzaghe seemed like a madman at times, and he is. He's crazy, lucky, and still very ****ing good.

Kessler and Lacy are one-dimensial fighters (similar to Pavlik) that get exposed once a decently witty boxer comes into the equation

Hopkins and RJJ...well do i REALLY need to state my case?

Eubank and Reid were pretty dangerous but beatable opponents...i never saw the fight with Reid so i cant make an argument there but i did see the Eubank fight and he seemed like a Euro version of Lacy...as a matter of fact...if you shaved his head...he COULD look like Lacy :tong

he tends to enjoy fighting slow robotic heavy hitters that fit his style well...but when it comes to TRUE boxing genius...he decides to fight 2 fighters that just don't have it anymore...

    yea...REALLY IMPRESSIVE

but its not TRULY his fault...i mean the SMW division wasn't LOADED with talent and fierce opposition...so is it totally his fault that he fought bums? not really...he did duck a few guys but you can say that about almost any fighter...so im still not impressed by his resume and "accomplishments"

you are SUCHA ****in noob...go play Fight Night Rd 3 and stay away from ESB

B-Hop...i dont take away from the fact that he handled a guy no one thought he would win against at ALL at his age...

BUT THE ****IN GUY HAD BRONCHITIS!! :nut and not only that...the ****er had to go up in weight...we already KNEW that he doesnt perform well when having to leave his comfort zone of 160 and to go FURTHER up in weight made him more useless than he already is at any weight above 160...

and i LOVED how you called him the MIDDLEWEIGHT KING...because that only further proves my point...HE'S A ****IN' MIDDLEWEIGHT! just because you're a middleweight champ dont mean the same success follows in other divisions...

I mean ****...the p4p king right now (Manny Pacquiao) is gonna go up against a guy who reigns in a totally HIGHER weight division and will most likely get his ass handed to him...but does that make him a shitty fighter? does that expose him? NO! it just shows that he had no place being in that weight class...

same here...i dont think Pavlik is shot, overhyped, or done-for...we just NOW know that he has NO business being at anything above 160+

    dumbass...

You really only need to look at his record H.

In the time period I mentioned, which preceded the time you said you came to ESB, he fought really quite average opposition.

He beat Veit..****ing smashed him. Was pretty solid to do that to a 30-0, who I think was his mandatory but after that not much to write home about. McIntyre, old man Brewer, some random argie, the great Tocker Pudwill, improved with Mitchel but then was forced to fight Mktrchian to keep his title and then took on Saleem who was coming off a loss. A lot of people felt his best years were being wasted on mediocre opposition.

He could only really ride on the early wins of his career for so long.

But he came back strong in his late career, no doubting that.
