bad promotion? you have to be joking. They guy had a so called world title for 10 years yet in that time fought maybe 2 or 3 good opponents worthy of a defence until he got to the LAST defence. It would be easy to call it cowardice, in relative terms, but essentially Joe puts it he didn't want tough fights. if you don't want tough fights then its not promotion that's the matter, its you the fighter.
:rofl Is he ****. your post smacks of someone who doesn't know anything about boxing. Total armchair fan stuff. Lewis and Buchanan are two post war fighters i can think of better than Calzaghe. Look into Calzaghe's record, it isn't great. On top of that Lewis and Buchanan were better technicians, Buchanan was also all time great tough on top of being absolutely superb technically. He is without doubt better than Calzaghe. So is Lewis, Lewis's achievements take a dump on Calzaghe's. 42 and 0 is easy if more than half of the opponents are cab drivers. Great fighter is Calzaghe but in no way is he the greatest modern era uk fighter if your talking post war. No ****ing chance. Yes Calzaghe would beat Froch. In no way would he Lacy him though.
:deal The only person Calzaghe ever did a Jeff Lacy on was Jeff Lacy, I remember these same idiots saying Calazghe was going to "Lacy" Hopkins, instead he got dropped and struggled like hell in what was a highly debatable SD, and do you know why? Because Calzaghe isn't the highly skilled ATG his ridiculous fans think he is. The fight was supposed to be easy, Calzaghe thought so, his dad thought so, his idiotic, knuckle dragging Sun reading fans thought so and the bookies thought so, he was something like a 4-1 favorite against the 43-year-old. Calzaghe fans are second only to Klitschko fans when it comes to moronic delusion. I would also go as far to say that there is solid argument for ranking Hatton ahead of Calzaghe.
I had Hopkins winning by 1 round, he landed the better shots by far. Calzaghe out worked Hopkins but he never landed many clean shots. It was close and i wouldn't argue much against Calzaghe winning but Hopkins was the technician in that fight. Hopkins as boring as he is to watch is technically one of the best ive ever seen in the ring of my era, even past prime. A truly great fighter without question. Hatton at the end of the day had the balls to step in the ring with 2 of the best fighters of his era from all weights, and in their prime to boot. Two of the best in the history of boxing in their prime. One who many think is a top 20 GOAT, and Hatton gave him work. Calzaghe never fought prime Jones which is a shame. Calzaghe never fought prime anybody of note bar Kessler. Calzaghe is a great fighter with an overrated record. Anybody who thnks he's the greatest modern uk fighter is an absolute **** imo. The fans who think he's a top 10 great should be shot! There's fans on here who think he's greater than Duran ffs. Those people should be put down.
imagine defending a so called world title against a guy who was a4-6 round regular. such a man would be ridiculed forever.
Don't forget Evans Ashira, fought mostly at LMW, moved up to MW and got sparked in 2 rounds by some nobody, then in his one and only ever fight at SMW inexplicably got a title shot at Joe Calzaghe. After inevitably losing to Joe (by boring decision), Ashira went straight back to fighting a 6 rounder against some journeyman at 154lbs. Joe really did have some farcical defences of his WBO strap.
Kabary Salem was another dreadful world title fight Calzaghe had. Especially since Salem had just been beat by Mario Veit, a guy Calzaghe stopped twice. After Calzaghe Salem was sparked by Bute and he hasn't fought since.
Well his first defence was against Branco Sobot which pretty much shows what a joke the WBO was at that time and it set the tone for the next 10 years of Calzaghe "reign" as "Champion". When you compare that to Carl Froch, who for his first defence traveled to the States to fight the highly favored Jermain Taylor, it shows a big difference in mind set between certain fighters.
or perhaps a difference in the belts worth. The WBO title was often seen as a insignificant title that held the same relevance as the British title. It wasn't even a gatekeeper title like the intercontinental one, lesser than that youth title. Calzaghe, up to Reid at least, was basically a British or at best Euro champion who was being marketed to unsuspecting Welsh fans as a world champ, and his fans didn't care that they were being dumped on just as Joe was happy to dump on them for a decade. nice guy. to Joes credit he increased his stock to world level some ten years later with his last two defence fights. But that's one hell of a wait for world level recognition.
A lot of complete trumpets on this thread!! Can guess mostly Froch fans. There seems to be a issue with people giving Calzaghe the credit he deserves. 1) Calzaghe is the best British boxer of the last 20 years no one even comes close. 2) I agree he could of took better fights!! He ended up undefeated with a very good resume. 3) He beat Hopkins and Reid.. Go check the results!! I agree with some of the posts he isn't the all time great but he is in the top 5 of UK all time greats.. My opinion is he is the best British boxer of all time!! I'm 30 so in my Era he is the best
in the 90s, this would be called so gay. silly really. these days Sergei is a guy who knocks out welsh boxers fast whey accidentally step up.
