Unquestionably it has taken a bad hit. I think if Kessler had won the Super Six it would definitely have made Joe C's res look better, so by the same token it looks worse now, as this is still a prime Kessler.
Perhaps, I just think a lot of me are going to be very surprised at just how good of a professional Andre Ward is going to develop into. He was supreme against the two best opponents he fought, and two of the best fighters the division had to offer.
Until Roy Jones faces and defeats anyone decent, Joe's win over him cannot appreciate in value. Sorry, but wins over Omar Sheika and a shot Jeff Lacy recently dominated by Jermain Taylor mean absolutely zero.
I don't think it necessarily matters how good Ward becomes. Kessler was the clear favourite for the crown, since Calzaghe retired both Cal fans and most other boxing fans have placed him a clear number 1 in that division. Even if Ward goes on to win the Six, Kessler is not the supreme smw he was supposed to be.
And why was he supposed to be so supreme, I find myself asking this question countless times following last night. His resume is not stellar, and he has been relatively inactive following his first professional defeat. We should have saw last night coming, Ward hasn't lost a fight since he was a 12 year school boy, and he looked dynamite in thrashing Edison Miranda, arguably a better win than anything on Kessler's resume. He was overstated.
Edison Miranda is a gatekeeper, nothing more. He is a poor man's version of Clottey or Zab Judah. Any top fighter worth his salt beats Miranda with ease. Beating him is no great achievement at all, and Kessler definitely has better wins on his resume than that.
And what would Mundine and Andrade be? We both know Ward would box their ears off for 12 rounds too. Fact remains, Kessler's recognition as a so called great fighter is unfounded, and always has been.
Kessler does have better wins than Miranda on his record, but I agree with you in general, Kessler had never really proven to be a great fighter.
Edison Miranda is not one of the best in the division. There are at least 10 better fighters in the division than him.
It's interesting to look at the only three fighters who have beaten him. Arthur Abraham, arguably the favorite to win the Super Six and undefeated long reigning champion at Middleweight. Kelly Pavlik, thought to be the next big thing before running into a master craftsman, Bernard Hopkins...and Andre Ward, who is as talented as any current active fighter in my judgment. You're right, Miranda isn't a great fighter, but for a young fighter like Ward to handle an experienced campaigner like that...was impressive. The Kessler victory has only cemented his place as a leading Super Middleweight, and he can go on to bigger and better things.
Based on what? Who has Andrade defeated? He's more durable, but he isn't a better fighter, I don't believe.
Who said he was? He was and still is a very good one, he has his flaws - read my previous posts on that - and Calzaghe and Ward were able to exploit these. Good win for Ward but it get's exagerated. Everytime somebody wins he is nearly an atg and everytime someone loses he is ruined, shot, exposed or something like this. It's getting very annoying.
That does not make him one of the best at the smw division. All in the super 6, Bute, Andrade, Balszay, Stieglitz are better than him.
He was the favorite to win the tournament, and many expected him to take on the mantle as the next great Super Middleweight. Some were even saying Kessler was a better victory than Hopkins for Calzaghe's career.
