Is it true that Joe Calzaghe very rarely, if ever sparred when training for his fights? To me that seems strange. I thought sparring was pretty much essential if you wan't to be sharp on fight night?!? I think it shows how naturally talented the guy is (if true), no sparring and a complete joke of a coach in his father. Do any of you guys know of other fighters who have done similar, and not sparred yet been successful? :smoke peace.
He did in the early days but when his hands got so ****ed he couldn't take the risk of damaging them before a big fight.
lol i've just noticed someone else has posted a similar thread, strange conicidence. but carry on anyway.
Tony gallento did'nt do much sparring he got his knocking out drumks in his bar. Joe's lack of sparring never stopped him winning & his old man cant have been to bad a coach
i suppose his dad isn't the worst coach, after all he did train lads, alot of which were local boys, and turned them into champs and bright stars of the future. He's not got the training skills of roach etc, think calzaghe would have been better still with a top notch coach.
After he beat Eubank for the WBO belt he did very little sparring for fights due to an ongoing problem with his elbow. Well known problems in his hands also stopped him from sparring and he preffered to concentrate on softer training devices such as the speed ball, pads and Rick Thornberry. He had a cortesone injection to even get into some fights (Lacy for one) and sparred very very little to protect the fragile hands. It's my belief that he adapted his style because he was no longer able to try and bang with full power. As he got older, he built his game around hand speed unless he had to resort to putting everything into his punches (Mitchell, Sheika).
his father is very good coach,,,,i like his corner work, he never pampered the boy during a fight,,,,if ricky went to enzo instead of Sr. i could see him having a better chance against pacman,,,,,
People say it was because of his hands but then Enzo Mac said he didn't spar before his last fight as well so I just think that Calzaghe sr is a **** trainer.
I found it strange myself but apparently its true, Calzaghe does spar but not a lot, he focuses on uphill runs & other cardio **** which explains his phenomenal stamina even at 36.
Calzaghe Snr is a monumentally **** trainer. Even when Joe did spar it was his stable maters like Bradley Pryce who was his chief sparring partner. Its a small wonder Joe achieved as much as he did in this sport training out of a dilapidated shed that had to be knocked down for health and safety, and a bull**** trainer who had him sparring journeymen.
I guess Calzaghe's reasons for not sparring were genuine later on in his career but it's surprising to me the lack of sparring and success he had.
