Calzaghe's thoughts on the year - "I was really in trouble against Jones"

On the Hopkins side of things it's ****ing pathetic the way that Calzaghe is trying to claim some sort of victory because Hopkins did Pavlik like that. Interestingly, Calzaghe does deserve credit for that performance, but not the way he's claiming. Hopkins made it very clear his lethargic showing against Calzaghe is what forced him to kick himself into being more offensive against Pavlik. It wouldn't have mattered who it was or what the circumstances that night, Hopkins would have "went after whoever was in the other corner with everything he had." Calzaghe knows it. That's why there won't be a rematch. It could be him getting the full brunt of Hopkins assault, and there's no way he'll dare face that. He got bashed up by a Hopkins who threw 4 punches a round.

Calzaghe stated at the post fight press conference that "Roy was still dangerous, I had to be smart. I didn't want to get caught with anything stupid" - when he was asked why he didn't go for the kill later in the fight.

To be fair to Roy he did come in with at least 2 more big right hands. One of the things Calzaghe does is somehow get straight back into his pattern of movement. From a British perspective, a complete contrast was always watching Bruno with trepidation as you knew that as soon as he got tagged his mind turned to mush and he stayed static like a punchbag. Luckily for Calzaghe getting tagged seems to have the opposite effect on him.

 

Yes, he said he was still weary of Roys left, that's why he didn't go for the kill... he thought Roy still potentially dangerous...

He just said he was always weary of Roys left and so held back at the end or words to that effect....

Hopkins has shown a long, long history of innactivity in fights against all sorts of opposition. Calzaghe was outrageously ineffective. Calzaghe's pressure was designed to keep Hopkins from doing much, agreed on that - but that's where more of Joe's bull**** lies get exposed, because he has always tried to claim that Hopkins wanted to do nothing but spoil, when it was Calzaghe who was trying to do the spoiling. He didn't want to fight head up, that was obvious. He kept trying to smother Hopkins with short windmills because he didn't want a real fight. Calzaghe is DUCKING Hopkins and the circumstances will hurt his legacy because he knows what will happen if they fight again. Hopkins won't sit on his hands. Bernard knows it. Joe knows it.

Lucky Joe didn't fight him 6 years ago when RJJ was at his peak, RJJ has not knocked anybody out in 6 years, Toothless Tiger, Joe knew this, smart man really.

Yes Cazlaghe is lying. These are the co-promoters and they'd never admit to saying that they just played out the last few rounds and didn't you see the bombs Calzaghe absorbed without any effect anyway. Anyone with half a boxing brain could see that Calzaghe carried Roy the last few rounds after the cut became so serious. In fact it got to the point where Calzaghe's cut man almost stepped into Roy's corner after seeing the shambolic attention he was getting. If you speak to Roy's backroom boys off the record you'll get the picture

 

You don't read so good. It said he would go after anyone with everything he had. ANYONE. There were other reasons we can be sure, but fighting the way that Hopkins did in the Calzaghe fight clearly takes more energy than coming forward and throwing. He wasn't even physically capable of squirming around and nervously trying to evade attack against Pavlik. Not at his age. When Hopkins came forward and threw he busted Calzaghe up. When Jones came forward and threw he busted Calzaghe up. When Kessler came forward and threw he busted Calzaghe up. When Bika came forward and threw he busted Calzaghe up. Ect. Ect. Ect. A guy with the tremdous offensive talent of Bernard Hopkins would have cut Calzaghe to pieces and likely knocked him out (as Freddie Roach believed) if he had come forward in a sustained attack. There's no politics or bull**** about it.
