The other thing that irks me is this particular timeline:

: Calzaghe vs Thomas Tate announced - Tate had just lost to Ottke but pushed the German all the way (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/2377243.stm)

: Thomas Tate pulls out of fight with 2 weeks to go - Tocker Pudwill brought in at last minute (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/2533121.stm)

Tocker Pudwill (the man who is often used to discredit Calzaghe) was a last minute replacement. I don't know how to get the Ring rankings from October 2002 but I reckon you'd find Tate in there.

    Speculation.

One reason to why Calzaghe became so big was because he was a great ENTERTAINER. No mather what you think of him, lots of people found his style exciting to watch. And Ward will never become entertaining. He might surpass Calzaghes achievements, though. But it is to early to say.

Very true, Uttercunt was owned and completely demoralised that he didnt have an answer to my superior knowledge.
Uttercunt is still sobbing after I upset him, by exposing him as a single loner that nobody likes

 if you look at the original post, i noted where calzaghe was champ. that can not be disputed. however, i didn't include the cute pic of joe with the belt that you jerk off to every night. yes, joe got as high as #3 but he was never #1. that's important to remember. he was never considered the best of his era. again, joe was a very good fighter but this was vs limited and/or old competition.

 I feel you guys' pain. I get called Popkin, Roskolnikov, el Cepillo, Arcane and more every time I open my mouth on here. It's wild.

im British and i do rate joe but all of these nuthuggers who call him an ATG, he is not and people trying to discredit other fighters records stinks of desperation especially froch's, record get a grip man im not even going to pull your post apart because its not worth it its that desperate. Calzaghe is underrated by some and overrated by others but on a hole he is more overrated

Im stunned by the hate towards joe calzaghe
a boxer who went unbeaten through the amateurs, unbeaten through professional career, a masterclass of boxing against Lacy
Unified the SMW titles against a guy like kessler, then stepped up after no first fight warm up to face hopkins at hopkins own weight class in hopkins own backyard and won
(calzaghe by this time not a young man himself )
The win gets discredited and Hopkins gets called an over the hill bum who then goes on to school Pavlik and then clown pascal (not really the sign of a over the hill bum is it? :huh)
Noe I read threads getting excited at the prospect of Hopkins fighting Dawson
But why so much excitement if Hopkins is an over the hill bum ?

first off joe was 110-10 as an amateur. very impressive but not unbeaten. (and btw he didn't beat chris byrd) also, hopkins weight class was middleweight not light heavy. joe had fought as the naturally bigger fighter in his career. hopkins is still a top fighter in a weak division today but the fact remains hopkins was 43 when joe beat him. still an impressive win but let's try to put it in some type of historical perspective.

Ill give you tha amatuer record fair enough however its still a stunning record, but your wrong about Hopkins he was fighting as a light heavy and had been up and including the calzaghe fight, joe took his first fight at the weight against the current ring champ.
Hopkins was used to fighting at the weight he fought tarver in 2006 at light heavy a good two years before he fought calzaghe so it was joe going up in weight
Hopkins hadnt fought at middle since he lost against Taylor in 05
He has got used to the higher weight class

Really interesting kmac and thanks. I'd done this but had a few gaps so you've helped me. Over this number of defences it says a lot about a 'champ's' reign. Have you any others?

    Look again

17 out of 24 world title fights had fighters who/were or became rated at some point

But you are still wrong because he fought 13 fighters who were rated when he fought them. Reid, Sheika, Woodhall, Veit2, Brewer, Mitchell, Ashira, Manfredo, Lacy, Kessler, Jones, Hopkins, Bika

and Eubank got rated for his loss so could be included to make 14.

    Just a note below

    The Ring 1998 yearly rating

    Frankie Liles
    Joe Calzaghe
    Richie Woodhall
    Sven Ottke
    Charles Brewer
    Robin Reid
    Thomas Tate
Calzaghe beat the fighter that beat #1 Liles, beat Woodhall, Ottke wouldnt fight him, beat Brewer, beat Reid and Tate pulled out against Calzaghe and retired
