The Golden Boy literally started to jump up and down whenever Macho tried to tie him up, which was often. His team must have anticipated it. It was certainly a novel maneuver.
Macho was pretty old and busted up already by the likes of Chavez and Trinidad. That is not to say he'd win if he was 23, but Id loved to see them fight at 130 when they were both younger, a dream fight so to speak.
In his previous fight he blasted out a 41 year old Ray Leonard who hadn't fought in 6 years. Seems like the chickens coming home to roost.
Well, boxing is also a business. Leonard's name still sold well...and the incredible thing is if Leonard had won, I'd been him and De La Hoya then!
His father had a hand in the decision. He didn't like that he was also training Lennox Lewis and splitting his time between the two.
I hated that era of Camacho. All he was doing was getting big fights on his name and charisma, then all he would do was try and survive.
I think Oscar got it in his head to work short spells with accomplished trainers to pick up new stuff from each one. Seemed to work out well with him. I thought he looked best with that Mexican guru guy, Jesus Rivero, who trained Miguel Canto. And while Oscar absorbed a lot of good boxing knowledge from him, de la Hoya said he noped out when the guy wanted to also take over his finances and came at him with a lot of other cult-type mumbo-jumbo. Can’t say as I blame him, but I like Rivero’s defensive approach and general philosophy of creating space and filling it with punches … somewhat trap fighting but it all works off the other guy’s offense and generating his fighter’s offense off the defense vs the opponent’s offense. You can see some of it at work in ODLH’s fights vs Rafael Ruelas and JC Chavez I.
Was Rivero the one who read Marx and said he was an atheist. He rubbed Oscar's dad the wrong way. I have to watch the Oscar documentary again. I was a big Oscar fan. A lot of the revelations bothered me.
I don't recall. A forgettable fight. All I remember was Hector running and holding, like he did against Chavez and Trinidad.
