I know Rosario had good / great power as a lightweight, but his frame was kinda' on the small side there... Rosario was not a big 135 pounder in build at all... Christ, when Chavez moved up to 135 to challenge Rosario on HBO in 1987, Chavez looked huge in that ring next to Rosario who too was 135 pounds... Chavez basically walked right through Rosario with both hands, etc.... MR.BILLthumbsup
Chavez was very special, how many in history could have done the same. ATG performance and then some.
Camacho had great speed, and it was evident in this fight...it was probably the determining factor in him edging this fight on the cards. BUT...How did you have him way ahead???? Rd 3-4 were not really close for Rosario RD 5 was a blowout and potentially 10-8 for Rosario 11 was huge for Rosario 12 was not really close in Rosarios favor at worst Rosario lost 7-5 in terms of rds. 7-8 were both close, I felt Camacho edged 7 & Rosario edged 8...even if you had both for camacho that would be 116-112 (or 115-112 if you scored 10-8 in rd 5). Not sure if you are exagerating the WAY AHEAD comment, or if you scored this fight differently???
I just scored this fight and I had Rosario winning pretty clearly. The HBO commentary was totally biased, they made it look like Camacho was winning the fight. I scored it 6 rounds to 3 for Rosario with 3 rounds even. Round 5 was a 10-8 round for Rosario on my scorecard. Camacho was moving away and Rosario was pressing forward the whole fight. And almost all the hard punches were landed by Rosario. Camacho (may he R.I.P.) never gave up and he lasted the distance, but he didn't win this fight at all in my book.
thats not the point, the point he was making was that camacho wasnt at his best, he was not trying to say that chaves wouldnt "embarrass" him. one thing i noticed also is the fact that they agreed to have the fight in a small ring and that definitely would make it harder for any outside boxer like camacho to fight a pressure fighter like chavez, NO i am not saying camacho would have won i am simply saying exactly what i said the fact that it would make it harder for any outside boxer to fight a pressure fighter in a small ring. These small details actually matter, because they can mess up the quality of a fight(even if by a tad bit) and thats important for passionate fans(at least some lol) cause they wana see the fighters they watch at there very best, giving it there all.Anyways hope i didnt get you pissed or frustrated in anyway, just trying to talk some boxing
Yeah, I had 6-5-1 Camacho. 5 wasn't quite 10-8 territory for me and I didn't give Rosario Round 8 either. Rosario let the fight slip away from him after Round 5 and didn't get it back until the championship rounds.
I thought Camacho won a very close fight. But he lost the war. He adopted a much more safety first style after this fight. I remember a quote of his at the time something to the effect if getting hit is Macho I don't want any part of it, or something like that. He was psychology scarred from his brush with defeat. He basically lost his ****sure confidence.
@mark ant Here is SS's scorecard for Rosario - Camacho. He gave 9 and 10 to Macho but with Rosario still winning well.
I recorded that fight on HBO that evening, saw it with my brother in law and his cousin. We all thought that El Chapo won a close contest over Hector.
