Shane Cameron dropping to cruiserweight, aims to fight Green

    c/o 3 news NZ

    Tue, 18 May 2010 12:25p.m.

New Zealand boxer Shane Cameron is aiming to drop from the heavyweight to cruiserweight division in order to secure a fight with Australian boxer Danny Green.

'Mountain Warrior' Cameron wants to fight Green who calls himself the 'The warrior of Australian boxing' later this year for the IBO cruiserweight and IBF Pan-Pacific light-heavyweight world championship belts.

32-year-old Cameron needs to shed seven kilos to get down to 90.7 kilograms required for the cruiserweight division.

"I'm not the biggest heavyweight around, so I'm able to drop the weight," Cameron said.

Dropping down to cruiserweight, Cameron won't change his fighting style.

"I'm still going to be aggressive, I'll be stronger," he said.

Before facing Green, Cameron aims to fight in an undercard fight to Green in July.

37-year-old Green’s last fight was in April when he knocked out the unfancied Manny Siaca.

Cameron won his last fight in March, against Australian boxer John Hopoate, after Hopoate was disqualified in the second round.

This would be a great matchup....bit of Trans Tasman rivalry....expect to be drinking beer from plastic cups at PPV venues if it gets made..

It's definitely a contender for Knock Out Of The Year.

Green fights in the light-cruiserweight divison at 180lbs. So it looks unlikely like this fight will happen.

I don't see how anybody can look at Cameron and honestly say that he would be effective at cruiserweight. In my opinion anyway, Cameron is far too big to drop down to cruiserweight and be effective.

To be honest though, why wouldn't he? Cameron brings nothing to the table that Green can't get fighting anyone else. He's also never weighed in at any closer than 9lbs to the Cruiser limit.

Does anyone think Alex Leapi could make Cruiser ?, his frame suggests he is a medium sized heavyweight domestically and small one on the international stage , Cruiserweight is a decent division and the pickings would be far richer as an international cruiser as opposed to a domestic heavy .would love to see him ring Danny Green's bell with one of those big Bob shots the way Danny has been carrying on recently .

I don't think so Josey. I'd actually forgotten just how imposing Alex is until I saw him at his last fight. Just my opinion, but he looks pretty bloody huge in real life.
