Campbell challenges Marquez! Tuesday, September 16 2008 Undisputed lightweight king Nate Campbell released the following exclusive statement to FightNews regarding his challenge to Juan Manuel Marquez: "When I got home to Jacksonville today and checked my email, I had hundreds of emails from fans asking me to call out Marquez, after the nice job he did on Casamayor. I don't really have much faith in this whole calling out business, because I tried that with Casamayor, and with Pacquiao, and it got me nowhere. But if Juan Manual is interested in fighting me, I'm all for it. My position all along has been that I have an IBF mandatory (#1 ranked Ali Funeka) to take care of, but I'm sure for a fight of this magnitude something could be worked out with the Funeka kid and the IBF for him to step aside for one fight to allow me and Marquez to get it on. Some folks think I'm the best lightweight in the world, and some folks think that honor belongs to Marquez. Well no matter which way you have it, me and him are #1 and #2 in the division, and a fight between us clears it up once and for all as to who is the baddest man at 135. I'm ready to roll right now. Marquez just went 11 rounds, but he didnt get seriously dinged up or anything so why not make this the co-feature to Oscar-Pacquiao on Dec 6th? He should be able to go again in two (with) and a half months no problem. The cynical side of me says no way this happens, that the in-house fight between Marquez and Diaz will get made instead. But I still wanted to put this statement out to let everyone know that I'm ready, willing, and more than able to send Marquez back down to 130, if the powers that be will just get out of the way and let it happen." Wow. If this was on the undercard for Hoya vs Pacquiao, that card would be undeniably essential viewing. It's a essential viewing anyway in my opinion, but wow what an event. I think Marquez would beat Nate, but it would be highly competitive, and arguably the most important fight of the year.
YES GOD MAKE IT HAPPEN! Their promoters need to not be ****s and make this fight happen before the end of year.
Nate is very knowledgeable and is in no way naive. He is right, this fight probably won't get made. Diaz vs. Marquez will probably get made instead.
Diaz already lost to Campbell, he brings nothing to the table except his status as a Golden Boy fighter. Marquez vs. Campbell is the best fight that can be made in that division right now. Marquez vs. Diaz isn't a bad fight either though.
GoldenBoy promotions move out of the ****ing way, enough of Campbells neverending press releases let him have his payday already
Reiteriting my point exactly. Either fight is great at 135, but Campbell vs Marquez crowns the real man at 135.
Personally, I don't think Diaz vs. Marquez is a great fight. It's a good fight, but not great. Any fight involving a combination of two of these three; Pac, Marquez, or Campbell are the only great fights that can be made in that division at this time.
Pardon me for being ignorant, but I get confused with all these belts and ****..... isn't Nate (not my opinion) the undisputed champ already? Why in the begining of the article says " Undisputed Lightweight King"?
Casamayor was the man. Marquez already beat the man, no matter how many paper titles Diaz accumulated and Campbell took. However, I would love to see this fight.
I really think Nate's calling out on GBP and HBO has hurt his status in this negotiations for right now. I'd LOVE to see Nate-JMM. I think that could be a real FOTYC but alas, no go for right now. Honestly with Nate having ties to Don King, I think a much more likely fight might be MAB vs Nate.
That's exactly what I think will happen.. Diaz is a dangerous fight for JMM too if you ask me.. I can see him losing to Diaz which could mess up plans for JMM..
